I read on the announcement that Alpha 4 only uses SMP kernel and that the
non-SMP is dropped.

I don't think this is a good idea and I consinder it a good way to problems in
hardware support and drivers stability.
Just to cite some potential problems:

- Some drivers are not working with the SMP kernel.
- Some wireless card drivers used through ndiswrapper are not working properly
or are higly unstable on SMP.
