[Bug 204378] New: SMP kernel as default may cause problems
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204378 Summary: SMP kernel as default may cause problems Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alberto.passalacqua@tin.it QAContact: qa@suse.de I read on the announcement that Alpha 4 only uses SMP kernel and that the non-SMP is dropped. I don't think this is a good idea and I consinder it a good way to problems in hardware support and drivers stability. Just to cite some potential problems: - Some drivers are not working with the SMP kernel. - Some wireless card drivers used through ndiswrapper are not working properly or are higly unstable on SMP. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-bugs+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-bugs+help@opensuse.org

The alpha cycle is the perfect opportunity to shake these bugs out. Please file reports on those drivers rather than saying, "please don't do that," otherwise they'll never get fixed. For further discussion of the SMP vs. UP kernel in openSUSE, please use the opensuse-factory mailing list. As a note, you can always limit the number of CPUs that the kernel will use with the maxcpus= boot option. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204378 alberto.passalacqua@tin.it changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|RESOLVED |REOPENED Resolution|INVALID | ------- Comment #2 from alberto.passalacqua@tin.it 2006-09-08 15:07 MST ------- Sorry, I used the bugzilla and not the mailing list because I never subscribed them because messages and spam are too much. Moreover the SMP issue is a potential cause of problems for me, so I considered the bugzilla the right place. One driver which has problems with SMP is the ralink one. It's already unstable on non-SMP kernels, and has to be patched for SMP. I doubt the result will be great. As I already said, ndiswrapper is reported to work bad with many cards with the SMP kernel. I know ndiswrapper is not supported by Novell, but it's used by many users to get wireless cards working. Also, it's pointless in my opinion to have the SMP kernel on a non-SMP processor. Honestly I don't see any need to do this change. It seems just an arbitrary decision of Novell to make things simpler for the product mainteinance, but not for the users. I hope to be wrong. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204378 gregkh@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|REOPENED |RESOLVED Resolution| |WONTFIX ------- Comment #3 from gregkh@novell.com 2006-09-08 15:14 MST ------- Yes, ndiswrapper is not supported, and not encouraged at all. If it doesn't work with SMP, then go work with the ndiswrapper developers to fix this, nothing we can do here. Please open a new bug for the ralink driver if it is unstable with SMP (note that running a SMP kernel on a UP machine usually does not cause any of the SMP races that might happen on a real SMP machine.) This should have no affect at all on users. If you find bugs, please open them. General complaining in bugzilla is not proper, so I am closing this one out again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=204378 ------- Comment #4 from alberto.passalacqua@tin.it 2006-09-09 06:35 MST ------- I opened another bug report in for the ralink drivers problem. Problems with SMP kernel are many however. Google is quite rich of examples (modems, network cards, raid controllers (adaptec just to cite one)...) and it's obvious I can't test and report all of them. And also SuSE can't patch or provide support for all of them.
