I don't accept the premise that the default wallpaper is of crucial importance
to anyone. Most people will change it to a photo of their pet within minutes.
But of course the wallpaper is a part of the distribution, and thus should be
taken seriously.
Any criticism should start with the guidelines, in my opinion:

Personally I agree fully with the current guidelines.
I too liked the power of the 10.0 wallpaper, but I also remember growing tired
of it quickly, and I haven't been using it since. And I also realize that it
contributed to the "scary" and overwhelming feeling many new users get when
first exposed to the power of openSUSE.
I just wish we could drop the blue with the waves which to me seems like a
ripoff of Apple's default wallpapers.
Something greenish would give us our own identity and I think this screenshot
shows that a green wallpaper can adhere to the current guidelines:
