Thanks.  That was enough to get me started and come up on it using Konversation.  I haven't yet figured out how to set myself up properly, but for now the channel identifies me as Guest30087.  I expect to be there at 13:00 my time.

While logging in as a Guest is perfectly fine, you also may register a nickname and use this from now on - How to register at freenode is explained at http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#userregistration Best, R
