Re: [opensuse] Another one takes the plunge...
found the compat-wireless rpms on the BS. I've been using those ever since and my problems have completely disappeared. I can now connect with no issues.
My two cents :)

Hi, I tried it out and my home network strength displays properly now on knetworkmanager after installing the compat-wireless rpms. Its late now so I will try it out on other networks tomorrow, but I think your suggestion has fixed the problem. Good job! Glad that it has worked for you! I am sorta wary of using BS RPMs,
they could break the system...but then these RPMs have worked great.

Hi, I should add that I didn't get the rpms for compat-wireless from the build service, I just used the ones that were available in Yast > Software management. Mark -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Can you check what repos are enabled, beside standard oss/non-oss. I can't see compat-wireless. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
The repo is at :-
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/schmolle1980/openSUSE_11.0_U...
Just add zypper sa -r
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/schmolle1980/openSUSE_11.0_U...
and perform the regular zypper dup.

I have this repo enabled and installed the drivers. However, Knetworkmanager doesn't do anything at all. It just sits there, sees no wireless networks and if I plug in my cable, it doesn't see my cable connection...but I can configure the card manually and then it works fine. All updates have been installed as of this morning. Default in KDE is to restore previous session, which is good when there is no problems, but if something is not working than it can be saved in session settings, when you log off, and restored when you log on. Set session management to start with empty session, and see if that helps. It made trouble with konqueror, it can be source of trouble with KNetworkManager. There is a bug report where you can see what happened when "Restore previous session" was used: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=414912 You may also see original KDE bug. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Rajko, Thanks for the tip, but I already have set session management to start with an empty session, since I could not stop Kmail from starting every time, even if I closed it before exiting KDE. So I'm afraid that can't be the answer. I have found in /var/log/Networkmanager the following lines, which keep repeating: Aug 19 09:42:13 deepthought NetworkManager: <info> Trying to start the supplicant... Aug 19 09:42:13 deepthought NetworkManager: <info> Trying to start the system settings daemon... Aug 19 09:44:13 deepthought NetworkManager: <info> Trying to start the supplicant... Anything else I can check, since I am really starting to miss being able to roam networks like I could in openSUSE 10.3... Hi Joop,
Seem like your wpa_supplicant problem What is the type of your wireless. Do you read this link http://en.opensuse.org/Tracking_down_wireless_problems
Hi medwinz, It's not just a wireless issue. KNetworkmanager doesn't do ANYTHING, even when I plug in my cable. I have to configure an IP address manually. My network cards are a wired NIC is a NetXtreme BCM5788 Gigabit Ethernet card and the wireless is a Compaq 6710b, which has a Broadcom 3945A BG chipset, if I'm not mistaken. I haven't read that link yet (and I will now), but like I said, it's not just my wireless that doesn't work. It's both cards. Do you use the KDE:Backports repository? It contains a NetworkManager-kde package with a higher version number. Herbert -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Yes, I have the Backports repository enabled too.

Hi Herbert, Yast2 tells me I am using KNetworkmanager 0.7r826733-7.1 from the Backports repository, so yes. Thanks anyway!
