How to install the latest firefox on SUSE 8.1?
Hi, When I try to install firefox-1.0PR-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz I get the following: ./firefox ./firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libXft.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory The following Xft libraries are installed: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXft.so.1 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXft.so.1.1 Does anybody have a package/solution for SUSE 8.1? Thanx & have a nice weekend, Aschwin Marsman -- http://www.marsman.org aschwin%marsman.org

When I try to install firefox-1.0PR-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz I get the following:
./firefox ./firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libXft.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

try running SuSEconfig ldconfig
then try the install again
I did what you asked, but it didn't help. Firefox wants libXft.so.2 and it's not available on my system. Other options? I downloaded the source code also but didn't see how I could select to build firefox i.s.o. mozilla. Thanx again & have a nice weekend, Aschwin Marsman -- http://www.marsman.org aschwin&marsman.org

The obvious answer is shown above, you have libXft.so.1 installed but -not- libXft.so.2. You will need to also upgrade libXft as well. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2) * PLEASE only reply to the list *

Yes, I know that, but where can I find it? At home I have SUSE 9.1 and everything works fine, at work we are using 8.1. I could try to build it myself but I hope for a more easy solution like a staticly linked firefox or one that uses the older Xft library. Upgrading to 9.1 is currently not an option because of the installed base.

The library seems to part of XFree86 4.3.0 and would require you to upgrade to that or find a staticly linked version on the firefox web site. 7 to go -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2) * PLEASE only reply to the list *

Thanks for your quick reply. I couldn't find a staticly linked version. Maybe I will have to wait until I can run 9.1 inside VMware (or the other way around). I still hope for an easier solution. I could use firefox on w2k inside vmware but that's not a secure setup that I like. (I would migrate the wrong way).

By looking around at ftp.suse.com I found: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/mozilla/firefox/1.0PR/ Currently there are packages for SUSE 9.0/9.1. Are there plans to add a package for 8.1/8.2? There is a .rpm src package, I can try if that is working on 8.1 also. Have a nice weekend, Aschwin Marsman -- aschwin^marsman.org http://www.marsman.org

You will probably find that atk, gtk2, glib, etc. are also out of date. You can configure the Mozilla stuff to not compile in some of it, but you'll see crappy fonts. There are some difficulties if you try to upgrade everything. If I can help with this, I'll be happy to try. I've done a lot of this stuff already. Good luck, Jim

You'll need xft2 for lots of newer software. It's at fontconfig.org. I know they have source, they may have rpms too.
