[opensuse] 12.1 KDE Stability
openSUSE v 12.1 64Bit on an AMD cpu. I was wondering if anyone has noticed instability in the KDE Desktop? I have found that after two or three hours that the screen develops flickering and that the task manager will vanish from the screen until I move the cursor to its' position Always Visible has been selected). This situation is cured by logging out of the desktop and logging back in. I have been running SuSE and openSUSE for some years not and have never had so many problems with a Linux distribution. This behavior is most annoying. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I heard this thing earlier also but this happened only in 12.1, 11.4 works perfectly well. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

No, I haven't noticed that at all. My main computer runs 24/7, but I use the KDE 3 style desktop. I agree, 12.1 certainly seems to have more than it's share of bugs, some serious. On 2 of 3 computers where I've installed 12.1, I had to revert to the old system v, from the new systemd, as too many things broke. The only problem I'm currently experiencing on my notebook computer, where I'm still running systemd, is the WiFi occasionally has problems connecting to WPA encrpted access points. Another issue is remote login is broken all all systems. I suspect someone decided to change a lot, without proper testing. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I'm running openSUSE 12.1 on 64 bit AMD with a nVidia video card... using KDE4.7.4 from the Factory repo and it's rock solid. My computer runs 24x7 with no flickering etc at all... in fact no significant issues. Maybe a video card/driver issue? I have a similar setup. The only issue I've noticed is that the computer is more sluggish with 12.1, compared to 11.0. I bought my motherboard about 5.5 years ago. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

How do you guys determine comparability with no mention of which NVidia chip used or which driver used? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Psychic links between KDE4 users ;-) I'm running AMD Athlon X2 6400+ (3.2GHz dual core), Gigabyte GA-770-UD3 motherboard, 8GB RAM, nVidia GTX260 using the last available nVidia binary driver from the nVidia repo, openSUSE 12.1 using btrfs, and KDE4.7.4 Factory. I think that covers it... and my 12.1 install is very noticeably faster than 11.4, is rock solid stable...ish (I did have the btrfs drive go into panic mode at one point, but that was easily fixed). Even the default KDE4.7 is fast and stable... fast enough that I'm also running it on an Asus EEE Netbook (Atom 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, Intel GME945) and it's fine. This machine is a default install, no Factory repos. Granted I don't run the laptop 24x7 like the desktop, but I've not noticed any significant issues that are not already reported in bug reports against 12.1. Every list member is supposed to remember that? O_O I may be too. I can't remember that far back. I only remember it was made really long ago, ATI X600 - could be a 9 year old design for all I know, while PCIe was an infant in any event. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." No, KDE works properly for me. You might want to post more information about your computer, maybe the driver you´re using, KDE version, kernel version (if needed for driver information). I also suggest you to file a bug and ask on the kde-userlist (both openSUSE and upstream.) hope this helps, -- kind regards, -o) German Wiki Team Kim Leyendecker /\\ Documentation& marketing www.opensuse.org _\_v leyendecker@opensuse.org ===================================================== my GPG Key: 664265369547B825 | IRC: k-d-l Twitter: kim_d_ley | Wiki-Username: openLHAG openSUSE - Linux for open minds - get it free today! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

First thing I would try is to update to the STABLE repo. The issue can be due to a lot of things. Old configs, graphics driver, dbus etc. Lots of components in use. http://en.opensuse.org/KDE_repositories#Stable_aka._KDS_.28KDE_SC_4.7.29 Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
