Unmounting a hard disk partition is impossible when you once went to browse it with konqueror; You have to totally exit X (e.g. by logout) to avoid receiving "device is busy"! I have not such problem in RedHat. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

say you are trying to umount the cdrom (usually /dev/hdc) check the following lsof /dev/hdc I suspect the kdeinit is holding the device open I have seen this a few times from suse it stems from the attempt to make device mounting user friendly. if kdeinit is the process keeping the drive mounted kill the pid listed from lsof (if not installed use yast and install it lsof will save you a bunch of headaches. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Killing "kdeinit" works, but, isn't there a better way (e.g. disabling kdeinit)? I have to frequently mount and unmount partitions; It is annoying! Thank you for your help, Bahram Alinezhad, Rudehen, Tehran, Iran. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I have not such problem in RedHat. In your KDE control panel, find KDE Components --> KDE Performance. Untick "Preload an instance after KDE startup" and then set "Maximum number of instances..." to 0.
This will cause KDE not to keep konqueror browser in memory after you closed it. You can also do this, if all else fails. Say you want to unmount /dev/hdb. Make sure no consoles or konqueror instances are open on that mountpoint. Then do: lsof /dev/hdb This will show you what processes are accessing the device. Kill the offending process and you'll be able to unmount. -- Kind regards Hans du Plooy Newington Consulting Services hansdp at newingtoncs dot co dot za

Go to Control Center>KDE Components>KDE Performance>, and set to 0 Maximum number of instances kept preloaded. -- Joe Morris New Tribes Mission Email Address: Joe_Morris@ntm.org Registered Linux user 231871
