So if I go into the 7.1 directories on the ftp site and pull the ppp.rpm, will I hang myself? I don't see the 2.4x of pppd as a choice under 7.0 Thanks, -----Original Message----- From: quintaq@yahoo.co.uk [mailto:quintaq@yahoo.co.uk] Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2001 8:25 AM To: suse-linux-e@suse.com Subject: Re: [SLE] pppd problems Hi Cory, I run SuSE 7.0 and I think I am right in saying that you cannot continue to use ppp-2.3.11-143 with a 2.4 kernel - certainly not with a vanilla kernel anyway - I do not know about SuSE kernel. Although the change was supposed to be effective from kernel 2.4.0 it was, in fact, still possible to use ppp-2.3.11-143, with that version. However the position definitely changed with kernel 2.4.2. If you look at the Changes document that comes with the kernel you will see the explanation and the url to get the current ppp (ftp://linuxcare.com.au/pub/ppp). I am no expert, but before I was able to get it working I also had to make some changes to modules.conf (explained in the ppp docs as I recall) and to my wvdial setup because of password problems. Wiser folk on this list probably have better answers, but this may point you in the right direction until the cavalry arrives. RE: [SLE] pppd problemsI can't say for sure (I'm a newbie) but I think 7.0 is glibc2.1 and I know that 7.1 is glibc2.2. If it were the otherway around it might be ok. But I'll bet that the 7.1 packs won't work in 7.0 because of the lib differences. -----Original Message----- From: Cory Steers [mailto:cory.steers.gmu9@statefarm.com] Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2001 1641 To: 'suse-linux-e@suse.com' Subject: RE: [SLE] pppd problems So if I go into the 7.1 directories on the ftp site and pull the ppp.rpm, will I hang myself? Hi Cory, I am afraid that I don't know the answer to that question. I parted company with SuSE kernels (and all things kernel-related), when I decided to install the vanilla 2.4.0 - since then I have been on a voyage of discovery. I read crrey's response, and it may well be correct. I suppose that you could download the rpm and examine its contents (rpm -q or use xrpm, which I find very convenient), and if it does not look it will make any complex changes to your system you could install it and uninstall if it does not work (back up your modules.conf befor making any changes). I have, however, seen a few posts from people who have had trouble backing out rpm'd modifications to their systems, so you will have to be aware of the risks. It does seem *extremely* odd that SuSE would provide a kernel 2.4 upgrade and not also provide the necessary ppp update - there are large numbers of us relying on ppp here in Europe and quite a few must have 7.0 (or 6.5 as we are now rather disappointingly informed it should have been called). Perhaps one of the SuSE (or ex-SuSE - hint to Ben), contributors to the List could comment. Sorry I can't be more help. Geoff _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I wish I could help with the ppp question. I haven't used it since about kernel 2.2.11..I've had DSL so I haven't had to deal with it. Maybe Mads or LenZ could find a good answer to the question. I simply don't know. -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.
