Stillcan't ssh or telnet
Thanks to all for the many responses to my call for help. I now have the Web Server, Telnet Server, and the SSH Server included in the Firewall setting. The Apache web server is running ok but the remote location still cannot connect with ssh or telnet. There is a file somewhere where I have to enable the linux box to receive ssh and telnet and I can not find it. I have a local net consisting of the new Suse 10 box, a Windows XP box and the old SuSe 8.2 machine that I am replacing. They get to DSL by way of a combination modem-router (2Wire 1701HG Gateway). The purpose of this exercise is to enable my grandson, from his remote location, to set up the files for his website that will use my Apache server. Now I need help finding where I can enable SSH and Telnet. Jack aa6vn@pacbell.net

As Brad Bourn pointed out 3 days ago, you will have to enable port-forwarding on the NAT boxes (routers) to allow remote hosts to connect to your services. Did you try that? \Steve

As has already been stated -do not use telnet- as it is NOT safe to use. Of course if you want someone to hack/break into you machine use it, that is your choice. First check to see if ssh is running with ps auxww|grep ssh|grep -v grep If it is not then rcsshd start and insserv sshd to have it start at boot time. If it is running then recheck the modem/router to make sure the appropriate ports are open (22 tcp & udp). Once you get ssh working scp (Secure CoPy) will also work. Also look into using rsync for transferring his web files. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998
By any chance did you enable the sshd daemon. You have to do this using Yast2->system->run level. As for telnet, it is either there or you have to go to network services -> network services and enable the telnet option. As it was mentioned, telnet is very insecure. Jack Reilly wrote:
