[opensuse] USB joystick
Any info on how (whether) to configure a USB joystick under 10.2? Logitech Extreme 3D Pro to be specific. All info I have searched refers only to gameport (soundcard) joysticks; this is in my on-computer docs as well as the SUSE SDB. Any help appreciated. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Have you tried using YaST yet? Regards, Jan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm not sure about 10.2. but in a 9.3 install, you could do this through YaST. HTH Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Mike YAST was the first place I tried, before going to the docs. Configuring a joystick is confined to those attaching to a game port on the sound card as far as I can see. This is consistent with what I found in the docs. S -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Are you sure it needs setting up? I don't have one so I can't test, but the things I read on the net indicate that it should be more or less plug'n'play. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

An interesting question. In the case of other things plugged into a USB port there is usually some indication that the computer has seen it. I would also think that there would be some mechanism to test the operation of this peripheral. What did you read on the net? It's more what I didn't read. I read about compiling the kernel, and making sure the device nodes where there, but I didn't read about a need to configure it. If you go to KDE's control center, in the peripherals section there is an entry "joystick" where you should be able to test if it works or not -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks for pointing out the KDE control center entry for a joystick. It was unable to identify the presence of a joystick checking its default /dev/xxx entries. I wonder if I need to specify that it needs to look at some /dev/USB... type entry. I just grabbed my kids Saitek rumble pad USB game controller and DKE control center and it showed up in the joystick section. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well an interesting development. The YAST-Hardware-Joystick module says it only applies to soundcard joysticks. BUT, after I plugged in the joystick I checked Hardware-Hardware Information and found an entry for the joystick. I then checked the KDE joystick module and it was there. All is well. Thanks for getting me to persevere! Curiously the KDE module indicated it had found an entirely different /dev... entry than it said it was unable to find before; odd. Hi, I have the same joystick at home and I successfully installed it through Yast
Hardware >Joystick section in OpenSuSE 10.0 and 10.2. However, I didn't try so far FlightGear or such games to be sure all axes (and buttons) are correctly configured. X and Y axes as well as button 1 and 2 works normally. I was able to play some games using it.

Yep, if you add the Packman repo to the installation source you'll get it. Works much better than previous iterations IMHO. Also a new game that's a real time strategy game ported from windows is available as well - WarZone 2100 (command and conqueor type). Works nicely as well and fun! Hi Bruce Checking with smart, I get flightgear from: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/suse/i586/FlightGear... and the data file as: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/repo/oss/suse/noarch/FlightGe... or something pretty close to that - I had to type it out rather than cutting and pasting :( Good luck Cheers Pete -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I have been unable to add a new installation source in YAST and wondered if you could use adding the Packman Repo (an often mentioned resource) as an example of how this is done. I've not had success after reading the Start-Up guide and tinkering a fair bit. I am sure I am just missing something simple. Thanks. http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories#Packman and then choose a mirror near you. In Konqueror I just mouse over the first USA mirror, right click, Copy Link Address and then go to YaST, Software, Installation Source. Click Add, HTTP, Next and in the Server Name either middle-click or Ctrl+V the copied link. Delete the http://. Then highlight the first slash after the server name and domain through the end of the directory list. Cut+Paste that into the Directory On Server area and delete the leading and trailing slashes. Click Next. Any errors at this point are usually due to not getting rid of ftp:// or http:// in the Server Name and leading and trailing slashes in the Directory on Server areas. Or the server is down, misconfigured, in the middle of a mirror process, etc. Stan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
