Suse 9.1. and USB sound Creative Sound Blaster MP3+
Hi, I've got USB Sound Blaster MP3+. Reading all the docs it should work under linux and alsa. But I can not make it work with Suse 9.1 After I plug it, it is listed in plugger under Unknown as Creative USB Audio. I can see it in Hardware Info as well (under USB section). There is dmesg output which shows that the device is recognized. But, it is not listed in yast2 sound, and it is not configured. There is no sound as well. Does someone have a clue whats going on and how to make it work? Bellow is the releveant information from Hardware Info and dmesg. Any help will be highly appreciated. I use this same sound device as I have -no- 32 bit pci slots, they are all 64 bit. I just plug it in and forget about it. No need to configure in YaST at all. In fact you will disable all sound if you try. You may need to unplug and plug in after you have logged into KDE, don't know about Gnome. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989 SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please*

One more thing I just remembered -DO NOT- use a non powered USB hub or you will have lots of problems. Either plug directly into a usb port or use a powered hub. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989 SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please*

Thanks Ken, pluging in after KDE startup have done the trick. But now ... I still can not see the card in yast, and I do not have volume control and mixer. So how do I enable the volume control and the mixer? Thanks Sunny

You won't see it in YaST as you don't configure it with YaST. It gets setup through hot-plug. Start kmix after you have it plugged in. You will need to show the mixer window in order to adjust the limited controls available. Ok, I got the mixer, so I have sound. The weird thing is, that if I enable the onboard sound as well, then whatever I do in kmix (i tried also kamix) I can not make the usb device to produce sound. This is not such a pain, as I do not need the onboard one, but still ... The other issue is, that I can not make the mic to work. I enabled it in the mixer, but no recording yet. Any clue?

Sorry for that. It was written in the FAQ that I should act that way. And ... the problem is that gmail does not have "Replay to list", only "Replay" - this is for the sender, and "Replay to all" then it makes a copy for the list as well. But you got 2 of them :) Ok, one way or another, I'l copy/paste so I post only to the list, hoping you are not going to unsubscribe :) Cheers Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

You should be able to blow into the mic and hear it in the speakers, if you can't, try clicking off/on some of the controls under "Advanced" and make sure the RED LED under the mic is on. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

Yes, I can heаr myself. But I tried with krec, and it does not record anything. Cheers Sunny -- Get Firefox http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=10745&t=85

There is no advanced tab in kmix with this sound device. And there are no settings in the input tab only in the output tab. Remember this is a USB sound device that -is not- setup with YaST as it will only work through hot plug. There is -no- available device for setup in YaST other than generic USB and that does not work. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989 SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please*

Actually I succeeded to add it using yast and generic USB. Then, in yast, if I hit "Test" is sounds. And it works as sound output. I just can't make the mic to work. It looks like connected, as I can here in the headphones when I tap on the mic. But as I can not make krec to record, I have no idea how to check that the mic is correctly recognized by the system. Cheers Sunny

Try using Audacity instead of krecord. I couldn't get krecord to work where Audacity just plain worked. YMMV. Stan
