[SLE] all memory not recognized
I switched motherboards and upgraded my firewall to 6.4 with 96M RAM, but when I do a free it only shows 64? The BIOS shows all the RAM. I am using a SOHO motherboard. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. My other 2 linux boxes shows the correct RAM. TIA. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

A quick (under 45 seconds) search at the SuSE Support Database (http://www.suse.de/) returned the following: http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/maddin_memory1.html -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 x121 _\_V 6D04 39E0 CAE9 9ADA 2CA3 2EBE 898A 6C37 CA1E A29C -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
You probably have to tell the kernel explicitly how much RAM you have,
otherwise it only believe in the first 64MB.
You can do this by adding the following like to /etc/lilo.conf, running
lilo, and rebooting:
append="mem=96M"
(yes, "M", not "MB")

just curious..... i've been fairly dedicated to suse and haven't used other linuxs much (i like what suse gives me) so i was just wondering if this mem "problem" is a problem for all linuxes or is it just suse. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

It is a problem related to the kernel, so not a SuSE-specific one. However, it may depend on the version of the kernel. Besides, the problem is actually the BIOS reporting the amount of memory to the kernel in a wrong way. Though hackers around the world have tried and tried again to rid themselves of the >64MB bug, it still happens. Often. It has something to do with the kernel, the northbridge on the motherboard, and the RAM itself not communicating to each other very well. It's not SuSE-Specific; as a matter of fact, SuSE kernels were the first kernels with patches to *prevent* this from happening... -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | http://www.atipa.com /\\ Kansas City, MO, USA | 816-241-2641 x121 _\_V 6D04 39E0 CAE9 9ADA 2CA3 2EBE 898A 6C37 CA1E A29C -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
It's not because of SuSE. I have two other SuSE systems here, one with 123M and the other with 80M and SuSE see's the full amount. But just a simple addition to LILO and everything is great. jason unrein wrote:
