This is really a frustrating time .... especially for newbies...
Why? The kernel is upgrading from 2.2 to 2.4 So are the modules. Qt-1.x is upgrading to Qt-2.x KDE1 is upgrading to KDE2. Both Qt's are required if both desktops are used. Many apps are caught between libraries for Qt-1.x and Qt-2.x and some will run only on KDE1 while other only on KDE2. Many have stopped running on either. QCad, Quanta+, BibleTime, KDevelop and others. KOffice apps are lagging behind KDE2 development. Some of the old KDE and KDEvelop programmers burned out and retired from their respective projects and the new ones aren't up to speed yet. KDE and KDevelop improvments may slow down for a year or so. XF86server is upgrading from 3.x to 4.x and install tools are having problems. Netscape didn't fullfil its promise, but Konqueror is stepping in admirably. Many are not familiar with Konqueror, however. GNOME is in the middle of another propaganda campaign and a new 'direction', again, but aside from new skins every so often, nothing else I can see. Just as well. KParts increasing compatibility and programmers are learning that KDE is easier to program for. Corporations are fighting Linux with 'innovative' software patents, instead of innovative software. Lizard lawyers are filing patents for everything including the alphabet, even on prior art with more than 25 years of history and activity. The good news? It's beginning to come together! KDE2.1 is outstanding! While some older apps are having trouble keeping up with platform changes, many, many NEW KDE apps are appearing at SourceForge.net. Last count I heard was over 3,500 projects. The biggest losers? Those who let some of these momentary frustrations drive them back to the dark side. JLK

Jerry, You think the newbies are frustrated, how do you think Bill Gates feels about this? {:-)> Didn't he just have an earthquake or something. He must think the ground is about to fall out from under him. But we cannot be complacent. Steve

Jerry,

If there is any justice in this world then Linux is driving him totally INSANE! :-)
