-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 This box has been ceasing to respond, on occasion, when nothing out of the ordinary is not taking place on the desktop. I finally loaded gkrellm to scope things out, and discovered that the processor load is inexplicably going to 99% for short time before the desktop stops responding. Oddly enough, the power button will still shut the box down in its ordinary(?) fashion & the desktop session is saved, apparently, since it comes up as I left it. I have just recently installed some new software but none of it was, or has been, in use when this happens. I can think of nothing else that would have changed an otherwise stable system (it has been up for roughly 35 days --outside of the occasional reboot for this problem or the CD problem (mentioned in another thread)-- & active. Now, the question: I have enabled the 'runaway process catcher. Will it... (1)notify one of the particular process causing this phenomenon...? (2)shut down the offending process...? (3)Both 1 & 2...? (4)Neither...? There seems to be not much info available in KDE about this so if someone can tell me what I can expect from the catcher or otherwise direct me to a resource I would be appreciative. - -- ...CH Avoid doing business with 'The Link' ISP. I'm not much of an expert but I've found the "top" command to be useful in identifying runaway processes. The system monitor tells me there is unexpected load on the cpu, top tells me the culprit. Handy also that it provides the PID, so one can issue a kill command. Jake
