Two questions please ... 1. Is it possible/advisable to download a 9.3 update to install over 9.1 Pro installed from DVD? 2. Will doing so give me an opportunity to update my installed apps especially Apache2? I've been running 9.1 Pro installed from DVD for some time and I'm having a niggling Apache and mod_python problem. I have never successfully mastered compiling from source and being a user more than a compiler person I'd rather not get into that. Maybe I'm just not brave/smart enough. Thanks Mike

There's two schools of thought regarding upgrading, 1) don't, do a fresh install, you will have far fewer problems, and 2) go ahead and upgrade, but be prepared for issues. I upgraded from 9.1 to 9.2 and from 9.2 to 9.3 and had issues both times. They were solvable but some were subtle. I personally don't think I would try an upgrade from 9.1 to 9.3, too many differences. As for compiling from source, you won't have to do that either way, upgrade or fresh install, and you won't have any problem installing Apache2 and mod_python, both packages are available for install. My 9.1 to 9.3 upgrade was successful. I was using 9.3 CDs for that if it makes any difference. Did not have any problems neither during the upgrade nor since then. If you do not have anything configured a special way I would try the upgrade. You could always go with the second option (i.e. fresh reinstall as many are suggesting) later in case if upgrade will fail. But if you want to save time and have nothing to save from the previous installation the complete reinstall probably the better solution.
2. Will doing so give me an opportunity to update my installed apps especially Apache2? <snip>
Apache was upgraded as well during the OS upgrade. Do not know about Python - I do not use it so it was not installed. Hope it helps Dmitry

does anybody know if, along an update, the libraries are fully uninstalled? I mean I have already upgraded time ago, and I feel like the disk was much bigger after than before, like if many things remain from the old install, taking place unusefully. thanks jdd -- pour m'écrire, aller sur: http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.net http://arvamip.free.fr
