SuSE and Printing (contains bug report for 7.3 apsfilter)
Hello, this email regards to a few printing issues in SuSE. 1. SuSE comes with lprng package but does NOT come with ifhp filter package even though the same guy wrote it (lprng.com). I requested the package for 2 years to be included in SuSE distro. ifhp filters are optimized for HP printers so why use apsfilter? Please default to ifhp filters for HP printers and apsfilter for all other printers. 2. SuSE's lprng package is kind of outdated. It would be nice if with the next release we would get an updated one to >=3.8.2. 3. BUG REPORT: =========== I have SuSE 7.3 FTP installed and came upon a printing problem. Problem Description: -------------------- I use LPRng (packaged by SuSE) and a Samba (compiled by myself) and apsfilter by SuSE. I use yast1 or yast2 to set up my printer HP LJ 6P (/dev/lp0 chained behind a zip drive). I either use the lj4 driver(yast2) or the laserjet driver(yast1). I also tried dpi300 and dpi600 settings. I can print fine from Unix. No problem. I set up sharing the printer via Samba. I print from Windows and each printout prints gibberish: ^[%-12345X@PJL COMMENT <printername> Driver @PJL COMMENT 1.20.0.0 @PJL SET RET=MEDIUM @PJL SET PAGEPROTECT=AUTO . . . BLAH BLAH This was never a problem until 7.3. The Windows machine has locally the 'HP 6P Enhanced' drivers from hp.com installed. Bug Hunt Process: ----------------- So I go bug hunting to help SuSE out. I am certain my Samba compile is not the problem. I figure it is either LPRng or apsfilter. I go recompile LPRng. I restart and the problem with Samba printing persists. Damn. Ok so maybe apsfilter package by SuSE is fucked for HP LJ 6P. So I go and install ifhp filters which don't come with SuSE. I set up the HP 6P to run through the ifhp filter. It prints fine in Unix and in Windows (Samba). Problem solved =) Resolution: ----------- apsfilter package in SuSE 7.3 FTP is buggy and needs to be fixed for HP LJ 6P. I have not tried compiling my own apsfilter since ifhp filter solved the problem. mk _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

When I was fiddling around with samba printer sharing, I had tremendous problems until I let the win-machines print through the 'raw' device created with apsfilter. It sends through the spool file directly to the printer without trying to interpret it. The output you give looks very much like some sort of printer control language, so my guess would be that apsfilter interprets it as ascii and escapes it to the printer. The raw device wouldn't do that, if my guess is correct. //Anders
Hi everyone. We are having similar gibberish problems with our much more modest epson stylus 670 on a SuSE 7.3 server with 11 w98 clients under samba. It prints one page fine, but queue 2 jobs at the same time and we get nonsense. Could this be related the current thread? Thanks, Steve. On Saturday 08 December 2001 11:34, you wrote:

I never had much luck with stock SuSE 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 lpr and my HP 6MP printer either. Some stuff printed alright, some stuff was 100 pages of crap I switched to CUPS and it gave me a single "lp" printer which seems to handle all documents I throw at from my w2k machines, and my MacOS9/X computers will print everything but .pdf or postscript based files. I think it's a driver problem on the Mac side though, since it seems to report itself as a color printer, which it is not. At least I get a tidy one page error notice and not page after page after page of junk. Here, it's CUPS forever. I've stood over my printer screaming all manner of cuss words for the last time.

I've never had any success printing from vmware. I've used vmware 1.0 for Linux, vmware-express 2.04 & now vmware Workstation 3.0 I am using Cups with SuSE 7.2, and everything prints great on my HP Deskjet 710c from withi Linux. If I try and set the parrallel port to /dev/lp0 in Vmware then I cant print from within Windows 98. If I set the parrallel port device to /dev/parport0 then VMware just seg faults on power up of the VM. If anybody has an answer I'd be greatful. Phil On Sunday 09 December 2001 12:35 am, you wrote:
