[opensuse] How to debug notifications about failed authentication
I installed the 64 bit Opensuse 12.3 (with KDE) on a small, entry level server. Things generally went flawlessly, with one minor annoyance. I get a 'Notification' every few minutes that says, "Authorization failed" on one line, and "Failed to obtain authentication" on the next. It gives me only the option to dismiss the nitification by clicking the little 'x' at the top left of the notification window. It does not seem to be causing any harm, as the apps I usually use seem to work as expected. But what is really annoying is that this notification tells me precisely nothing about what program is producing the notifications or what service it is failing to get authorization for. I want notifications, when there are updates available for the system, and would like to be able to resolve problems that arise that cause notifications as they arise. As I am a programmer, and not a system administrator, and with limite experience with Linux anyway, I have no idea even where to look to find out what is happening. So, where do I start? I'll appreciate any information I receive. Thanks Ted -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

As root, start by tailing the log tailf /var/log/messages and / or as user tailf .xsession-errors-:0 <---- Which ever of the .xsession logs in your directory that has the latest date. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
Thanks John.
That is a start, but I don't know what to do with what that tells me.
There is only one .xsession-errors file, and it says nothing about
Authorization failed. It has only many instances of a line that
begins "Error, cannont create transaction proxy
QDBusError("org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner","Could not get
owner of name 'org.bluez': no such name")
In /var/log/messages, there do not seem to be any error messages,
rather, I see only messages relating to org.freedesktop.PackageKit,
and all seem to indicate successful activation of a service with that
name, and all seem to come from dbus or dbus-daemon.
I have no idea what any of that is, let alone what it means.
I am paranoid about keeping my systems up to date, and so greatly
value notifications when they tell me of new updates to apply. And, I
have the mental habit, as a programmer, of treating warnings produced
by my compilers as if they are errors demanding a fix, and issue a
commandline directive to silence a warning only if it is already known
that a given warning is spurious. So what do I do here? Are these
messages I see the cause of the problem, or do I have to dig further.
And if these messages I see are responsible for the notifications I am
getting, what do I fix, and how?
Thanks
Ted
