I was happy with Gaim under RedHat 9 and have now started to use the default SuSE 9 Kopete chat app. It has been less than stable but today today it keeps crashing, shows folks as Offline who are Online, and is exhibiting other bad behavior. I have a stock SuSE 9 Professional install upon which I have most recently (yesterday) run an Online Update. The severe instability seems to have followed yesterdays update. Anyone seeing this as well? Thanks! dmc

That whole Offline/Online thing drives me up a wall.. (its been going on a while for me, I even posted in the Bug report but no one responded) :P It seems that with AIM if the sender isnt in your list they appear offline.. I also noticed it crashed 2 times since I updated yesterday.. Hmmm.. --Charles

The on-off thing may be toggled in the Kopete settings. I updated to version 0.7.4 and it seems more stable, at the moment. Current problems are: No History and no Word Wrap. Is anyone using Kopete successfully under SuSE 9 Pro? How about Gaim or Everybuddy? Thanks! dmc

I take it back, Kopete is not stable, it has crashed again. I guess I need to get Gaim up and running again ... unless there is some sort of a generic unresolved Chat-SuSE9 conflict that plagues all of the apps?? dmc

Mine has just started crashing under 8.2, after an update, I think. It would be nice if it got fixed, anyone know who to tell?

Have you tried getting your Gaim from u-l-b via apt?? easy to install and so far no problems at least for the past couple of years! You can get the latest by doing: apt install gaim IF you have apt installed. If you need more help look for stuff on this list by Richard Bos or google for SuSE Apt Howto. Richard

Kopete seems to be worse after getting an online update (SUSE 9.0). I can't seem to post or receive messages anymore. It was just erratic before the online update. Also, Yahoo Messenger for UNIX, RedHat 9.0 RPM worked fine under 7.3, but does not exchange messages under 9.0. -- Jim Sabatke Hire Me!! - See my resume at http://my.execpc.com/~jsabatke Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup.

The SuSE 9 Pro CD version of Everybuddy (v.0.4.3) has an odd way to enter new contacts. It requests an "Account", "Protocol" (Yahoo), "Group" (Trinity College), and "Contact". When I enter an Account (e.g. "employees") and a Contact (e.g. jsmith) under the TrinityCollege folder I get: TrinityCollege - jsmith ---employees Can someone explain this, please? Also, GAIM appears to be unable to connect, is the SuSE 9 Pro version broken? If so, and even if theoretically not, what is the preferred way to update? (I tried YaST but it does not find any updated patch via the Online Update option. I believe GAIM is at v.0.7.3-8 and there is a Beta version 8.1) Thanks! dmc

Note: In my College application of Chat they require access to Yahoo instant messaging. Everybuddy complains that "You are using an older version of Yahoo ..." and then fails to connect. Sigh ... dmc

David, You seem to be having odd problems with the chat programs not many other, if any, are having using those programs. I use Kopete mostly without problems, but alternate according to my mood. Now I don't have a Yahoo or MSN account, so can't say what problems you might run into there. Seems recently, if you haven't been keeping up, MSN/Yahoo decided to change their services so that other programs would have difficulty using them. Their way of tying you in to their stuff, I'm afraid. Both Gaim and Kopete did manage to resolve the restrictions and should be usable on both services. Many here use them for both. Not sure what is happening with your setup, but those programs should be stable. The latest I have from SuSE rpms is Gaim-0.74-0 and kopete-0.7.3-8 installed. As I mentioned earlier, both work nicely. I use them on AIM, Jabber, ICQ, and IRC usually. I try to stay away from any MSN or Yahoo accounts, just don't like them nor their general practices. You might want to start either program from a shell/konsole to see if you get any helpful messages when they crash. Regards, Lee -- --- KMail v1.5.4 --- SuSE Linux Pro v9.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206 On any other day, that might seem strange...

Perhaps the Ximian 2 desktop w/Gaim will be the best way to go ... after someone else on the list runs some tests for stability! ;-) I am in a somewhat mission-critical app here at the College and just do not have time to chase bugs in apps, not to mention the harm the instability causes to Linux credibility here at the institution. Thanks! dmc

It's really a shame that Linux credibility suffers because you are so busy.
Perhaps your university should ask the local linux users group to handle these problems while your sitting in your management meetings. CWSIV On Thu, 2004-01-08 at 08:45, Dr. David M. Colburn <SNIP>

get yourself the most recent version of Gaim from user.local.bin http://www.usr-local-bin.org/ the rubber turnip rpms do work with the new msn protocol (protocol was chaged and all old clients got kicked off from 15th oct, the suse9 version is an old incompatible client and will not connect) I have no experience of "everybuddy", gaim is working for me as my daughter can easily access all her friends via MSN.
Thanks! dmc

I doubt it. http://www.usr-local-bin.org/deps.php |These are the Rubber Turnip RPMs of various dependencies, built for SuSE |Linux. These packages are built for SuSE 9.0, they are not intended to work |with previous versions, but your mileage may vary. Please note that these |packages are not official SuSE releases, and no guarantee is made of their |usability or that they will not damage your system. you could try and report back. (do a test install with KPackage, make sure you select the "Test (do not install)" and "Check dependencies" options when you attempt to install it, that way you get to check the dependencies without risking your system) Either that or else get hold of the source for the latest gaim and build it yourself. The one he last built for 8.1 is gaim v 0.59.9 (build date 23/1/2003) which is incompatible with the new MSN protocols which came into effect last October.
