I have a set of paid for 9.1 Pro CD's Can I: a) Copy the cd's for backup purposes b) Copy the cd's for distribution? Free of course c) Can a license be arranged for a third world country that sells it at a reduced cost? d) Can I install on all boxes I wish to? Can someone from SuSE please respond if you see this? Many thanks. Ahbaid
a) Copy the cd's for backup purposes
Of course. The only think you couldn't do in the past and I would assume you can't do now is resell it for profit.
b) Copy the cd's for distribution? Free of course
You can give away copies of the CD's until your broke and blue in the face, but you can't sell copies.
c) Can a license be arranged for a third world country that sells it at a reduced cost?
Of course you can. But you'll have to contact sales as this is a help list for users and no one here can speak to such contracts.
d) Can I install on all boxes I wish to?
Of course, but you only get support for one machine per serial number.
Can someone from SuSE please respond if you see this?
No. Need since I've answered your questions. And SUSE people only answer tech questions on this list when they have time. No one else from SUSE monitors this list. a) Copy the cd's for backup purposes Yes.
b) Copy the cd's for distribution? Free of course Yes. I hand these around the local Linux group and friends, believing that if they buy the next release, the system is working perfectly. That's certainly how I started.
c) Can a license be arranged for a third world country that sells it at a reduced cost? I am not Suse, nor a lawyer, but it's a pretty damn generous license. If money really is that tight, share a copy, take it in turns to buy the next release, such cooperation helps to build the local Linux community.
The spirit is to put something back, 1) Provide Linux support locally and on this list. 2) Send something back to Suse, if you can't afford much money, send help and appreciation. Progress is having more machines running Suse and more people comfortable about administering them.
d) Can I install on all boxes I wish to? Yes, my copy goes onto 75 machines.
Can someone from SuSE please respond if you see this? Please correct me if I'm wrong?
