Friends, Ran zypper ref; zypper up few mins ago from my 11.2 x86-64 and zypper upgraded 40 pkgs including nvidia drivers. After reboot gdm now fails and system stay on console. What's wrong? I noticed nvidia module went no uploaded by kernel. I had to hack /etc/X11/xorg.conf replacing "nvidia" with "nv" in Section "Device" but doing so I miss compiz functionality. The proprietary nvidia drivers are at ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/ The 11.3 repo is now up. You can also try the "nouveau" driver now bundled with the kernel. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

On the factory list there is an active discussion / effort to get the latest nvidia drivers compiled and provided back to nvidia to host. I haven't used the nvidia drivers, so I don't know the pros and cons of old vs. new. Solved! By adding the symbolic link this way and by issuing modprobe: 1) ln -s /lib/modules/2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop/updates/nvidia.ko /lib/modules\/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia/ 2) modprobe nvidia note: my kernel flavour is 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop, while nvidia driver was installed by the zypper up into /lib/modules/2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop At the end not a big pain! -- Marco Calistri <amdturion> The connection between the language in which we think/program and the problems and solutions we can imagine is very close. They appear to have 3 versions available for download in the 11.2 directory. None of those will work? Or do I misunderstand the naming convention? Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Greg, Versions depend upon Nvidia card you have installed. In my case since my laptop has a GeForce Go 6150, I have to rely on: nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop-195.36.31_2.6.31.5_0.1-11.1.x86_64 x11-video-nvidiaG02-195.36.31-12.1.x86_64 See U, -- opensuse 11.2 - Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-default x86_64 AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MK-36 - GeForce Go 6150 Gnome 2.28.2

*Apparently* is the right term, since my previous nvidia update prevented gdm to start: there was no any nvidia.ko module loaded, for this reason I added a symbolic link from /lib/modules/2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop/updates/nvidia.ko to /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia/ A curiosity: what is your /etc/X11/xorg.conf "Driver" setting? If you want to see what it would look like, go to init 3 and run "X --configure". It will save off a temp copy of how X is recognizing your setup in your home dir. And if you need to tweak, you copy that into /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
