[opensuse] opensuse 11.3 display anomaly
AMD Phenom(tm) II X2 550 Processor G96 [GeForce 9400 GT]
During a fresh install of 11.3 sometimes the installprocess stopped. After moving the mouse or pushing the spacebar the process continues. Not a insuperable problem sofar. But after the install in the configurationfase I saw the mousepointeranimation stopping and also the configprocess. I had move the mousepointer continously to finish the config. ----- When the install was finished and after a reboot I started the systemmonitor. The symtemmonitor stopped and after a small mousemovement or a push on the spacebar the display continued. I switched off all disktop effects, logout login, but it doesn't help. Systemmonitor or something else yast or so it doesn't matter everything freezes until I touch the keyboard or move the mouse. The only thing that helps is a reboot to 11.2. Doe anybody have an idea wat this can be ??? Thanks, Hans -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Just to exclude posible userconfig in the homedir I created a fresh default useraccount. The problem stays, the systemmonitor starts after a few seconds the graph freezes and after a touch of the mouse or keyboard it continues for a few seconds and the display frezes again til i touch...... Did you try to use the binary NVIDIA driver? Maybe noveau cannot handle your graphics card. On http://kdeatopensuse.wordpress.com/2010/06/27/kde-week-2425/ you find some hints regarding removing nouveau. I have Nvidia 6100. Before doing the 11.2-11.3 upgrade from DVD can anyone confirm it works with the new nvidia driver or not? Thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

For those that want to avoid that sledgehammer. See the 11.3 release notes. http://www.suse.com/relnotes/i386/openSUSE/11.3/RELEASE-NOTES.en.html#04 Adding "nomodeset" on the kernel boot line was the recommended first step of fixing the problem. Greg I have added the nomodeset, but the problem stays. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I reported a similar problem years ago. It affects one machine running 11.0, but it appeared earlier; my current solution is have the router continuously ping it. Quite older versions on the same machine work fine. And of course there is a bugzilla. You have to report your problem on a new one. It could be a regression of that problem affecting some hardware. Or a similar problem. -- Cheers, Carlos E. R.
