What desktop environment do you recommend?
Hi all, I'm currently using KDE but need to change. I don't know whether its just boredom of using the same environment, or whether its due to it not providing what I want. I have been using it for about 6 months, but I just can't seem to put my finger on why I'm not happy with it. I'm looking for advice on alternatives people use. I have installed Gnome and find it to be aesthetically pleasing, but can't make judgement at present as I only looked at if for 20 mins. One of my main gripes is Kmail. I have become use to it and need an alternative that will be as feature packed at that was. Any suggestions are appricieted, bearing in mind I have only converted to Linux in the past 6 months. Thanks, Ged. -- -=SuSE Linux 9.0=-

You can use Kmail in any desktop, provided you have the relevant libraries installed. Dylan -- "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin

You will need to install a desktop and give it a try. Let you be the judge of what you like and don't like. There are many of them out there. It is a matter of choice. You will only know if you like it when you start using it. I personally have used KDE, GNOME, enlightenment, fvwm, Windowmaker, and fluxbox. I am trying openbox that comes with SuSE. Fluxbox does not come with SuSE and you will need to compile it to get it to work. There are many more than the ones that I mentioned. I have also used XFCE. Again it is a matter of choice. I think that I will be going back to fluxbox once I can get the thing compiled :)

Well again there are choices. I am using Evolution. But as another poster mentioned, you can keep your Kmail if you wish. Noticing that you just converted, I would stick to the desktops that are on the CD/DVD's or you can find a rpm for. You may not be up to trying to compile something right yet :) Marshall Heartley
I am currently playing about with Gnome and am finding it to be much better than KDE was. I am also playing about with Evolution which is also great. I am still open to any suggestions people have though. thanks. On Sat, 2004-01-24 at 14:34, Marshall Heartley wrote:

I've been using the KDE since around mid 1997 IIRC. That was alpha 4. I like it. I've looked at Gnome, and it has some nice features as well. I can't give an honest assessment of how it compares to the KDE because I haven't used it enough. My response to you is this: You have to chose for your self. As far as specifics go, if (you believe) there are actual, functunal deficiencies in the KDE, it is, to some extent, your responsibility to report these to the KDE development team. That's how you pay for free software. I also understand that everybody's time is limited, and we can't always do everything we might to give such feedback. One other important note. You can run just about all the Gnome apps under the KDE and vis-a-verse. I run some Gnome apps such a gftp, dia, etc. Mozilla is build with GTK, which is what QT is to the KDE , as I understand it. Well, just for kicks I decided to try Window Maker (SuSE package). It can run KDE and Gnome apps, has multiple desktops and is lightweight and fast (very abbreviated description). It actually will run most things............I think. You need to set it up to run "your" apps, but it is quite straight forward, and I found it to be quite intuitive (I have about 2yrs experience). Running gkrellm with its bells and whistles also gives you a bunch of cool tools as well. I am also trying IceWM, but I am not too sure about it yet. And hey, set up KDE, Gnome and Window Maker and switch between all 3 (this is Linux, it is under your control)! -- Regards, Roland Hill Registered Linux User #330226 http://pl.net/~rnrhill/rhweb.htm @ http://counter.li.org

You can install and use several different desktops, if you wish. Many KDE apps will run fine on other desktops. You might want to consider Ximan, which is also owned by Novell and will likely work well with SuSE.

FVWM has been the desktop of choice here since SuSE 5.3 In those days KDE had difficulties with dual screeen CAD workstation configurations, but fvwm saved the day. Just tell YAST to load any of the desktops, and take your pick from the options list on the kdm startup GUI. The SuSE default has begun to show a an understandable lack of attention to fvwm configuration, but editing the fvwm script isn't difficult.
Well, personally I preffer much more Gnome to KDE for
a few reasons:
- I make daily use of Mozilla, Gaim, GnomeMeeting and
Dia that basically are Gtk apps and so run better with
Gnome than KDE. I also spend many hours in front of
the command line and I think the gnome terminal is
much more polished than the KDE terminal and I work
faster with it.
- I hate the Qt libraries and its license that, from
my point of view is too much radical and could create
long term problems since it does N_O_T allow for LGPL
(Lesser General Public Licence). Since KDE is build
with Qt I think it's a big problem.
- I don't like Konqueron since it doesn't run many
JavaScript enabled pages, and so I can't use, for
example, Yahoo mail popups menus. But Konqueron is
everywhere within KDE and I can't disable it.
Anyway if you decide to use GNOME go to RedHat or
Debian. They have a much more "correct" GNOME than the
default included with SuSE (I don't know if the Ximian
version of Gnome correct the mistakes). I hope this
will change soon with Novell adquiring Ximian and
SuSE.

I have always preferred KDE myself, but it is purely up to you which one you use. Jim On Sunday 25 January 2004 15:53, Enrique Arizón wrote:

Well, I use both SuSE, RedHat and also Debian,
Mandrake, some other exotic distro, Windows, Solaris,
Mac, "Java", ... since I work with computers. It's
just that I'm ussually more interested in the server
area when I post/reply in this list. It's really
active and I ussually have got good answers to my
problems really fast (sometimes just in half an hour).

One thing I like about SuSE is that they do a good job making software
available on the distribution. GNOME or KDE should be a personal choice,
and both are included in the SuSE distribution. Whether you use KDE or
GNOME becomes a religious issue.
