Yast1 has a capability for going to the SuSE FTP site and selecting modules for update from the ones available there. I can't find anything corresponding to that capability in Yast2. Am I missing something? Another related question: is there a way to change the default FTP site known to Yast1 to be one of the SuSE mirrors instead of SuSE itself? Is that information hiding, perhaps, in some configuration file for Yast? Paul Abrahams

YaST2 does it too, at least the version I got with 7.1 Maybe you should update YaST2.

Again, my YaST2 lets you have a pick. BR, Gudmund

I've got the Yast2 for 7.1. Under "software" there's an icon for "Change Source of Installation", but that seems to apply to installation, not update. I tried pointing the ftp address at the update site but it didn't work because the setup file wasn't there. There seems to be a tricky distinction between directories intended for update and those intended for initial installation.

I'm looking for the Yast1 facility. There's less correspondence than one would expect (or want) between Yast1 and Yast2. it would be nice if Yast2 was just a graphical version of Yast1, but it isn't. Paul Abrahams

Hello I have found the same. Whereas in Yast1 you can nominate any directory such as, in my case /home/stu/downloads where i have downloaded rpm's from ftp.kde.com and so on. in YAST 2 i don't have this option. Or am I missing something. Surely this would be a comparatively minor change to the Yast2 protocols:) Stu
Is there a chance you guys are confusing the install-packages section of yast with the online-updater? Hi Jonathan, I don't think so as the install-packages section of Yast 2 keeps on asking for the Install Media. ie Yast 2 is not quite as clever as it would like to think it is. Unless you know differently Stu

Uh... I didn't read the whole thread so maybe you've been through this already, but in yast2 of 7.1 (or are you on 7.0?) Go to the software section and click "Change source of installation". I'm sure there's a similar link in yast2 7.0 somewhere.... ? ---------------------------------------------------- Jonathan Wilson System Administrator Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com Central Texas IT http://www.centraltexasit.com

Not quite so, I fear. There's a very confusing issue here: the difference between installing and updating. The "source of installation" applies to installation of the full system, not to updating from the most recent packages, stored in a different place on the website. (All that is the subject of a separate post.) And the packages in the full system are the ones on the CD, not the later ones such as the 2.4.2 kernel. Paul Abrahams

I'm afraid not as far as I can see. Anyone on this list , has yast2 caught up with yast1 ont his point? I keep on going round in circles with no result Stu

yes, I am, sorry guys. Too much staying up late, I guess... There are different ways to go, one of them the update/patches (online update), which only works on properly mirrored sites, ftp.sunet.se f.i. doesn't work, ftp.suse.com works. It should only pick patches for things already installed in your system. Two other ways: - Installation Source: stalls when I type any of the ftp addresses (time out (ftp.suse.com) or Errno something "couldn't mount...") - Install Software: > asks for CD1 > Skip, choose Network + enter ftp address/path (time out (ftp.suse.com) or Errno something "couldn't mount...") I tried different paths to some packages, stepping all the way down the tree, no use... I think it needs browsing capabilities, there. Trees can be pretty complex, and it shouldn't stick to one standard source tree structure. What I didn't try, is entering the CD and try to change path from there. Perhaps it (thinks it) needs to read a package db? Should work differently for an installed system. Not a solution, but maybe a clue? Yast1, then, for the time being. BR, Gudmund
