Hi ! Happy new year to all ! I read an article about the situation of MandrakeSoft 2 days ago : MandrakeSoft will face Short-Term Cash and will not be able to release another Mandrake Version if they not receive lot of donations. According to the former CEO of SuSE gmbh in Spring 2002, the company should be profitable by the end of the Year (2002). But since Months we do not hear from SuSE about the financial situation. We do not know if the company is profitable yet. Redhat Released a newsletter concerning their financial situation and we know now that this company is profitable. If SuSE does not release a balance sheet publicly, this is certainly to avoid speculations concerning their situation. Do you have some informations concerning SuSE balance sheet ?
Hi, Good questions, but as indicators go it should not be too bad: 1. Former CEO left because he achieved what he needed to 2. SuSE has a different business model than Mandrake, tends to be more enterprise orientated and server orientated (where Linux is really kicking off). Good questions though, wonder if we have good or bad news heading our way? Maybe they sold out and became a Linux brewery :). Matt

I think one needs to look at the investors on SuSE's web site. I suspect that there will be a shakeout of some Linux distros. I think that on the personal side, Mandrake lost their edge, which was easy installation. I think that both SuSE and Red Hat are just as easy to install as Mandrake. "Matthew" wrote:

Ya, I agree. I started out on Man 7.3 but I was often discouraged because they really didn't have the kind of support I was looking for. I would go to their website only to drift around and not find any pertainent FAQ's or user support channels that would answer question. They tended to make it seem as though they were more interested in have me buy into service packs and upgrades rather than help me get comfortable with using Linux. The other contention I had was the *.mdk nature of their packaging. I found it to be one of the more proprietary distro I've used. I used to have all sorts of problems with non mdk packages and updates. I do think they had some nice innovations for Linux. I like the ablility to change my screen res and color depth from the gui. And they used grub way back then and did a good job with it IMHO. Also Mdk would detect my new hardware. All of this was about 3 years ago and I'm just starting to see these sorts of features in SuSE and other distros now - at least to the level that Mdk had it back in 7.3. I remember seeing Mandrake in places like Target, Wal-Mart, etc... I think that they had a good lead in to the comsumer market. Where they failed IMHO is follow through in the form of support and other ancillary services such as SuSE provides. Getting updates, the users email list/forum. Mandrake never seemed to have the depth I thought they should in this area. I know a few people that use Mdk and most like it. I just wonder about what the company's trying to do - they seems to lack directions Cheers, Curtis. On Friday 27 December 2002 08:00, Jerry Feldman wrote:

Point to remember though these are business areas where you sell by volumes coorect on the other hand the gross profit margin is very little, leaving sometimes a negative net profit ( in other words loss). Going for masses can sometimes be a loss leader if you are tyring to compete with other products. -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx
