Help! I totally f&^%$ up my system! I configured my SuSE linux box to do the following: 1. Auto reboot if shutdown 2. When starting up, automatically log in as user 'abc' (do not prompt for login name or password) 3. Auto start a java application called CrushFTP.jar located here: /home/abc/crushftp/CrushFTP.jar Steps 1 and 2 work fine. I tried to pull off Step 3 by adding the following line to the very bottom of the .bashrc file (located in the /home/abc directory): java -jar /home/abc/crushftp/CrushFTP.jar (I know this command works because if I go into a shell prompt and type this command, then my application starts up.) So, I saved the .bashrc file and restarted my computer and now what happens is this: Linux boots as normal, logs in automatically, my program (crushftp) starts up, but now I get a grey desktop instead of the normal KDE desktop, menu bars, desktop icons etc. If I try to quit the crushftp program, the screen stays blank, and crushftp starts up again by itself! Help! I tried this: Reboot, and when Lilo comes up, I tried typing "linux single" to log in. When I get to the prompt, I try to use vi or mc to edit the .bashrc file, but I get an error that the file is read-only and doesn't let me change it! Any ideas how I can modify this .bashrc file? I need to delete that last line I added to it! Also, what is the correct way to get an app to automatically start up whenever the computer is restarted? thanks --------------------------- Eric Carbone

What you describe is far less bad than some of the stuff I've done :-O

Sounds like you need to "su root", then use vi to edit it. As an example, from my RedHat machine at work: -rw-r--r-- 1 gordonp gordonp 124 Nov 26 15:38 .bashrc Root should have "write" rights, as above. "chmod u+w .bashrc" to get it (as root) if need be. CMIIW but does booting to single mode not mount the root filesystem readonly? If so, then you need to remount / read/write...
Sounds like you need to "su root", then use vi to edit it. As an example, from my RedHat machine at work:
If he boots to single mode, he *is* root.
-rw-r--r-- 1 gordonp gordonp 124 Nov 26 15:38 .bashrc
Root should have "write" rights, as above. "chmod u+w .bashrc" to get it (as root) if need be.
If such if the case, then yes. My guess it's not the problem. HTH Jon
