[SLE] /etc/profile modifications (was: Re: [SLE] 6.4 Lots of good. A few bumps.)

Imho, changes/additions to /etc/profile should be put in /etc/profile.local,
which you should be able to re-install on a new suse.
SuSE uses this scheme, localizations in /etc/someservice.local, more eg.
/sbin/init.d/boot.local etc.
So part of ungrade procedure could be to explicitly get those files:
find / -name '*.local' -print
and of course backing up /etc and /var/lib :)
There is a good chapter in the SuSE manual on upgrading from one version
to another---it's an explicit menu in YaST, too.
Good luck! Bye-bye, Eric

yes. I should revert to that. And I should buy christmas presents right in time... ;-) I think I started "my own" /etc/profile *before* this came up. I should find out which package it's from, reinstall, compare and put the differences into profile.local. Or wait for the next update and do it then... ;-)

yes, I realy didn't update, because I wanted Reiser FS and this meant a new install. In my experiance it's always some work to update - whatever method. I've read same stuff a few times in the manuals that came with various distros, and that makes me miss the important news when they appear, since I now don't expect much changes.
