Hello, Like others on this list, I too have been having issues with NVidia. I keep getting lockups. These occurs when a screensaver tries to activate and when playing OpenGL games like crack-attack. I want the 3D acceleration active but I feel to keep my system from being hosed, I will have to use the XFree86 driver instead. :( This really gets me upset. I have tried the following, Using NVidia's AGP instead of AGPGART, Ensuring that the BIOS does not change the interrupts on the AGP/PCI bus, and Nothing sharing the video card IRQ. Is there any other suggestions that I can try before I have to desert this lost cause? I had 0 lockups in SuSE 8.0 and I am using 8.1. The card is a GeForce 2 MX/400. Thanks list! Well, I also have a GeForce2 and it is working 100% in SuSE8.1. I can play any of the 3D accellerated games, including Windows games in WineX. The first thing I did, was I DID NOT use the drivers supplied by SuSE. I went to nVidia and downloaded their latest driver set (you can get it in RPM if you like). The next thing that helped... I used this little perl script to double-check everything. http://www.linuxgaming.co.uk/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=13 (if the link doesn't work goto http://www.linuxgaming.co.uk - Downloads section, Utilities. It should be the first link) The script checks everything to make sure your nVidia stuff is config'ed. If anything isn't quite right it will let you know what's wrong and tries to give you engouh information to set you in the right direction to repair it. Hope this works for you. C.

Yes, Marshall! The screensaver, I had this problem too on one of my two boxen. But I just turned the screensaver off and activated the power saving features in the KDE control center instead. Power Control - Energy - Standby (20 minutes, 10 minutes, whatever). As I learnt from another thread here, screensavers are a leftover from ancient times anyway, and the power saving mode is far better. NO problems since then. Cheers .... Hi, Some suggestions: - Can you find an .X.err file on your system? You might find some clues in that file. Lines with errors are noted with an (EE) in front. - Try to install an older version of the NVIDIA_GLX and NVIDIA_kernel. That has worked for me some times before. http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_archive Or try to install the tar.gz packages. - Check out the Nvidia forum Someone might have had the same troubles as you. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=14 - Try running NVchooser: ftp://download1.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-3123/NVchooser.sh Regards, Jostein On Friday 15 November 2002 21:52, Marshall Heartley wrote:

Hello list, Sorry that I have not been able to hopefully give more info on this issue. I have used the many great suggestions that the people on this list gave me. But the problems continue. I now know that the problems seem to be with certain programs. To point the finger to the 2 culprits in my case, xscreensaver and crack-attack. I know that these programs crash from time to time. But when they do, it locks my machine down HARD!!! I have to push the power button because I have no control over the machine when it locks down. I cannot even ssh into it! I think that it has something to do with the driver that Nvidia uses. I'm not sure though. Oh well. One more thing, Can I submit a report to SuSE or do I need to (GULP) send it to Nvidia? I would like to have this issue resolved and I'm running low on ideas and unfortunately patience too. Thanks to all who helped out with suggestions. One "not so very elegant" way around that is having root running a script in the background. Something like: #!/bin/bash # Just wait awhile... sleep 600 top -b -n 1 > /root/topfile ps -ef > /root/psfile # Some other monitor commands... # Perhaps it's enough with runlevel 3... # Or perhaps just killall -9 X /sbin/init 1 #end 10 min. after you start this script, you will be dumped down to runlevel 1, and hopefully get control over your computer. After you've started the script you try to make xscreensaver or crack-attack lock-up your computer. (Try for about 8 min. and then stop the script, and start it again).

Afterwards you might have some more info on your troubles... regards Jónas H Pálsson
