Thanks everyone for help on this. I am gonna try the ssh and touching a file with the workstation running a cron job to detect the file and start fetchmail. Cheers Rich

The kernel supplied with Smoothwall does not include NFS support, for (reasonably) obvious security reasons.
I think that the approach of using SSH to either run the command directly, or touch a file which is picked up by a cron checking script is probably the best solution.
