We have received a project to show how we can use Open Source software in our organization. Currently we use NT and Exchange. Showing a cost effective replacement for NT for file and print services (Linux/Samba), and Web (Apache) is no problem. I'm a bit less familar with a replacement for Exchange. It would be easy enough to use sendmail and a POP/IMAP daemon but the calendar/shared folders isn't as obvious. Would appreciate any advice on what products in the SuSE 7.0 distribution could be used in this case. Thanks, Robert -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

There's no integrated solution like Exchange. Like you say, the mail can be handled by any MTA (sendmail, qmail, ...). Shared folders - here you can use usenet news servers like DNews. For calendar, I think you have to use a web based solution. I've tried WebCal, which does most of what you need in general, but you can try them for yourself. The beauty of these solutions is that yoy can use any client software that you like. You can find all this software on freshmeat.net. Although it is not free (bummer) Lotus Domino is available for Linux,
you can get a demo at www.lotus.com.
All the ones 'in the know' in these type of things assure me that MS
Outlook is a poor copy of Domino. From my own experience with Oulook,
I'd say that there _has_ to be something better! Big, ugly, and a right

I was reading somewhere a couple of months ago that a software house is in the process of producing a M$ Exchange server clone that will run on Linux and a clone of outlook to run on Linux. This is claimed to be compatible with the M$ products. Obviously this is not open source, but it should be far less expensive the M$ equivalents. Sorry I can't remember any more details. David

There is no Notes Client for Domino Notes Linux at this time, just the server product. I would very much love to see a mail client and the Designer product made available for the Linux platform. Lotus is moving to some new products that may allow access via a Web Browser, so that may be an option. Databases can easily be configured for Web access, just look at Lotus's web site. If more businesses request the mail client, Lotus may pay more attention. It is a very powerful "groupware" product. A Windows Client could be run via VMWARE for instance as one alternative. Other thoughts: Does anyone use StarOffice in this way? I know it has the ability to access mail and has calendar and scheduling. What about KDE2? Lotus Notes ( Bloating Goats ) is NO match for M$-Exchange. Having said that, no, I'm not an M$-advocate. Lotus just can't match up to anything. They did get the concept right, but they mess up just about everything else. E-mail breaks down unless _everyone_ you know uses notes, groupware in notes relies on such a behemoth of a database that unless your'e using NT/Win2k you'd be using a couple of times bigger iron running the LN db than you'd be using for your favourite closed-source database ( be it Oracle, Sybase, Informix, or any other.. ). This big iron does not make it run faster ( first it'd have to run fast, and that I have never seen - ever ! Crawl... maybe...) There is ONE product that has both a client and a server running on Linux, provides compatibility ( somewhat ) to Exchange, IS compatible with Outlook, and is only ALMOST as ugly as Lotus Notes. That is HP's OpenMail. Unfortunately, the original questioner asked about open-source/free solutions, but alas, there are none. Good groupware is very hard to conceive, and maybe one day Magellan or KOrganiser will be there, but today there is only the evil trinity, MS, HP and LN, LN being the most evil and BOFH-ish of them all... Unfortunately, Tor is right. Anyone who monitors a Lotus Notes shop for any length of time knows it's the groupware suite from hell.....prone to server crashes and slowdowns, and just generally sludgy. One hopes and prays for an open source alternative, but, as Tor alludes to, the conception, design, coding and debugging of good groupware is a major undertaking. One hopes for the further "networked" evolution of Magellan and KOrganizer, and StarOffice might be a good candidate now that it is open sourced (for those who will say SO is bloated, it is, but groupware, with all the features business requires of it, may be doomed to be bloated anyway). -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

I'd just be happy if StarOffice moved faster than a glacier. ;) It's basically impossible to run on anything less than a P2 333. I've tried to run it on my WinNT4.0 and Win98 boxes, and it's pretty sludgy there. Of course, they "only" had 64 MB of RAM. YMMV. Star Office seems to crash on me regularly under WIndows. :( -- Don't look at me, I took the red pill! -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

It's not so much the network install that allows for that but the installation of the StarOffice Schedule Server, which is available on the SO 5.2 CD-ROM.
If you proceed, I'd like to know how things are going.

<SHAMELESS PLUG> Or you could wait another month and get the SuSE Linux Mailserver: - Postfix MTA :-) - Cyrus IMAP server :-) - IMP Web interface (client and Administrative) :-) - Fully OpenLDAP integrated :-) - Works with your favorite mail client :-) - No Groupware component yet :-( Previews of coming attractions can be seen on our German site: http://www.suse.de/en/produkte/susesoft/imas/index.html
