Do I have this right? CUPS is GPL, and is the printing engine. It comes with "some" drivers in the SuSE distro. I can go here: http://www.easysw.com/printpro/standalone.html and spend $50 and get a package of specific drivers? I did a search, and 6MP comes up with a en/hplj6p_4.ppd.gz ---- This makes sense. SuSE finds my printer fine when do Autodetect, but it was trying to use LJ4 drivers. What has me concerned, is that it really seemed like it saw the printer as a postscript printer, but I could never print postscript files (.pdf or illustrator) from my Macintosh machines. I'm in OSX now, but I had the same issues with OS9. Why am I "excited" this time? Because in setting up papd.conf (netatalk's printer conf file) there is a place for: "Netatalk Printer Name":pr=|/usr/bin/lpr -Plp:\ :pd=/usr/share/a2ps/ppd/level1.ppd: :op=root: the second line wants to point to a .ppd file and level1.ppd and level2.pdd don't work correctly. It now seems like I can get the .ppd from the aforementioned website and point to it from papd.conf. --- So, If I foolishly decide to give this failed marriage one more try, do I install SuSE with cups like normal, then go and get hplj6p_4.ppd and stick it in /usr/share/a2ps/ppd, point to in in papd.conf and I might have postscript printing from a Mac? I use pretty recent drivers from HP on my Macs, and I don't think they are faulty. My windows machines seems to print fine, and my macs print text fine, but not PDF or Illustrator files. Basically, if you're still with me, I think I erred in saying all of CUPS is flawed, it mostly works, I wonder if this right here might be the solution to the Mac ps problems?
