I'd like to be able to login to an 80x25 text console (like we could a couple of years ago). Solutions, suggestions please. In more detail I'd like to do one of the following ideally the second: 1. CTRL+ALT+F2 and have an 80x25 text console. 2. Log in using KDM as a user and automatically get a full-screen 80x25 text console (no graphics required) until logout. I've had a look at setfont and similar. I haven't worked out how to use SVGATextMode or even if that's what I want. This can be done by putting "vga = 0x0f00" in your /etc/lilo.conf (don't forget to run /sbin/lilo afterwards)

Thanks. I'd forgotten about that. That gives me the option of setting the parameter at boot or creating an alternative entry in the boot menu, though I'd rather change the option after boot.
