Make sure and check IRS.gov, I got free filing and web based tax computation because of the state I lived in. I also got both free for my state taxes... beats paying for tax software! W.G. I downloaded the TaxAct2004 and installed it under WINE. Install seemed to run okay, but TaxAct04.exe fails to run. Any thoughts? No. I haven't run TaxAct under wine yet, but then I also use CrossOver and run Quicken 2003 under COO. You can get a 30 day trial of COO and test TaxAct with it. Wine is just toooooo lame to run most apps. I game up on it a long time ago. Fred -- "As Internet technology itself vaults into new areas, so too does the Microsoft monopoly and its tried-and-true bag of tricks." -US Senator Orrin Hatch, (R) Utah

Thing is, they sell TurboTax for Mac OS X, so you'd think it would be fairly simple to port that to Linux. Scott -- POPFile, the OpenSource EMail Classifier http://popfile.sourceforge.net/ Linux 2.6.5-7.111-default x86_64

Isn't it a GUI app? While BSD console stuff should port relatively easily, the same I'd guess isn't true for cocoa. As far as I know, GnuStep or the other NeXT implementations aren't ready for prime time yet, at least not as far as Cocoa compatibility goes, and porting to gtk or qt/kde will be a major project. Not incredibly difficult perhaps, but certainly not something you'd do in an afternoon

My ignorance on the subject is showing. I didn't realize there was that significant a difference due to the GUI's. I mistakenly assumed it was like the gnome stuff that works fine under KDE and vice versa. Oh well. Thanks for setting me straight. Lets not forget that Intuit is into M$ pocket (M$ tried to buy them a couple of years back) and may have an influence on the port. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989 SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please*

I hope so. Every year I ask their help people when I can expect a native Linux Version of their tax software. You'd think they'd be tired of the question by now. :) Mike

That reminds me of a line that was going around in the OS/2 days, supposedly from a software vendor. "Nobody wants an OS/2 version and I wish people would stop asking for it."

It seems to be set for Central as opposed to Eastern. It was set for Eastern, I know, I did that myself during the original system configuration. <sigh> I know I complain about the time in the day, but jeez. :)

I hope so, as I keep at them as well, and ALL of us SHOULD, IMHO.....FREQUENTLY!! I was told by one of the coders there a couple of years ago, that there IS heavy pressure from MickySoft to NOT port to Linux. Surely all we need to do is inform them that if they allow another company- or dare one say it, an OSS product- to fill the obvious market need in the short term, they may never get the same chance or the same market share again. VBG! Terence

I've been telling them that for quite awhile. Of course, no one has produced a QuickBooks "clone" so they aren't believers. Actually, Appgen has been developing MyBooks for some time now. I've always wondered why more doesn't get said about it. It's pretty price now, though. They did have a small business edition for @ $100 way back when. Didn't see any such animal for sale this time around. I am running Quicken 2003 on SUSE 9.2 right now, I haven't tried any tax programs (YET). CrossoverOffice runs Quicken 2003 just fine. I still have an active XP partition, which I still use occaissionally for my nice new Epson scanner, and will get Turbotax <ugh> later.. you had to bring up taxes, didn't you!! you need to check out www.fairtax.org and get on the bandwagon, so we can get RID of the IRS!!!! -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800
