It's nice having Linux in your own language, but I'm not quite sure I should be glad to use SuSE in Dutch. There are so many spelling errors, it's just embarrassing. I think it is better to not do any translation of software, unless you have somebody from the native language doing these translations. Is it just the Dutch translations that are so bad? -- Peter Kleiweg

Peter, Version 6.4 (my first encounter with SuSE) was so terrible, I wrote to SuSE offering to do the proofreading of future editions. (I don't know German to do the translation.) V-7.1 and 7.2 were *less bad*; 7.3 is better, but still faulty. -- Regards, gr (in /usually/ balmy, sunny Florida's Suncoast) [powered by SuSE-7.3 Linux 2.4.10]

I haven't seen the Dutch translations (and I probably would never notice any error in them anyways), but the Danish translations are of varying quality. KDE's is good, with a few untranslated holes and a couple of weird words in some places. Yast and the installation procedure on the other hand is quite bad. Anywhere the 3 special Danish letters appear, they are mangled and the character following disappears. In many places, the help frame contains a mixture of English and Danish and in a few places a Swedish sentence comes up. Also, in some cases the help text tells to press a button with one word on it, but the actual button has another word. Gimp is excellent, as far as I can tell, but I am no graphics expert, so I wouldn't know if it has the correct terms. I might actually consider using the English texts though, because that would make it easier to use the tutorials found on the net. Well those are the programs I have noticed. The rest fall into 3 categories: I don't use them, not translated, and nicely translated. Regards Ole

Hey, why don't you volunteer to do some of the translating or proofreading? Proportionally few of the people you use Linux are program well enough to be involved to any great extent, but we all can contribute in other ways. I am a writer, so I contibute by teaching Linux with my Linux Tutorial (link below). Others contribute by writing doc for various projects. If you think the Dutch or Danish or Burmese translation are not up to par, then why not get involved? My two cents. This reminds me of what I heared about a famous poet (forgot who it was) who said: '(...) I won't be talking about arab and persian literature since I can neither read them in native language nor do I trust the translation (...)' Yes, and I am only using Software in English (US) since when I was young the German keyboard wasn't even invented (besides maybe in typewriters) so I am fairly used to it:-) Cheers ....
