Ha, a shared sentiment, and someone my age ;-D. (My phorum name is xen82). To get my short opinion: LILO probably wasn't good enough anymore, But Grub2 is a nightmare. I have so many times wrestled with its command prompt when something had failed again and AGAIN. The system is 80% guarantee that something will go wrong. It seems to be highly configurable but it's almost impossible to do. The basic tenets of having a good presentation in your boot screen (the first thing you or someone else sees when you boot up your computer or get past the BIOS screen) are not met. It is an utterly flawed product, both architecturally and from a user interface point of view. The inability to customize your boot screen because they are auto generated based on defaults, is the worst. I have currently a handcrafted boot menu but I will have to replace it each time the kernel is updated, most likely. On Tue, 1 Sep 2015, ellanios82 wrote:

not completely true. did you try YaST?? if lilo fails, one have to boot a disk, with grub it's most usually not necessary jdd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Grub2 is a nightmare.
In all openSUSE versions, grub legacy is still supported, just, beginning with 13.2, not installable at original installation time. None of my too many to count openSUSE installations have any bootloader other than grub legacy installed, and grub legacy from 13.1 is what I use for other distros that only offer grub2. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I've never stopped using LILO. The main annoyance I see (at the moment) is booting a xen Dom0 (because LILO doesn't have support for multiple initrd). Using mpack works fine, but I usually just boot over PXE instead. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (23.8°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free dynamic DNS, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I've never had issues with Grub/Grub2. ;-) Comparing my experiences with that in LILO times is unfair, as I've learned much till then. Admittedly, booting my disk-less Atari ST 520+ back in the 80ies was also simple: you just had to boot it from 2 floppies. ;-) Have a nice day, Berny -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I think of it in terms of what LILO cannot do. Technology moves on. My machine doesn't have a floppy disk. I can't boot from the floppy. My laptop not only doesn't have a floppy, it doesn't have a built in CD/DVD drive like my old one. My desktop doesn't have the ability to use IDE drives. My tablet not only doesn't have a floppy or a built in CD/DVD reader, but it doesn't have sockets for SATA never mind IDE. I bet my tablet doesn't use LILO. To enjoy the benefits of the new you need to let go of the old. -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well... Think of it other way: it is often (in software) easier to create new, than to modify the old. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
