Though I may know my way around the DOS world, I am rather ignorant when it comes to Linux. I do however have a strong desire to stop lining Bill Gates' pockets by supporting his Junkware. The SuSE LINUX 6.3 Manual (page 4) says, "But that is not all: with KDE and GNOME, there are not one, but two, free and comfortable graphical desktops available which themselves make the call for 'Linux on the desktop' ever louder." This leads me to believe that I should choose one or the other. Then I read the message board posts that seem to indicate that they could be used together, but it may not be a good idea. I haven't even gotten the distribution installed due to this confusion. I need the information to decide which one, if any, I should install. Do I need either of them to run a GUI with the X system? How do I decide which one to use? Linux Wannabe, Harland Grimes ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Hello, I too switched from Windows to Linux. KDE was the clincher along with Star Office. I like it. Try KDE. If you like it, keep it. If you don't, try GNOME. Hope you checked that your hardware, especially modem, have no problems in Linux. I'm sure you know about Winmodems. Cheap junk. George On Sat, 08 Jan 2000, you wrote:

The nice thing about Linux and especially the SuSE distribution is that if you have enough room you can install both KDE and Gnome and several unique window managers at the same time. You'll have to choose one as the default, but it is quite easy after that to start a different WM. I currently use KDE, but I also enjoy experimenting with Windowmaker/Gnome (Gnome sits on top of these other window managers - it can't work alone), Enlightenment/Gnome, even having the Gnome panel in my KWM (K window manager; KDE sits on top of this). Bascially you are free to install everything and experiment to your heart's content until you find one that suits you. SuSE defaults to KDE, YAST2 won't even install GNOME by default. (OK, I like YAST1 a little better anyway, and used it to install GNOME). That said, each will access each other's applications, the default KDE installation will grab a few GNOME apps anyway. Window managers are user choice items, you'll probably prefer KDE because you're more familiar with Windows. Save GNOME for later, when you have time and interest. You can have both installed.
