I have several machines running 7.1 (2.4.2 kernel, lvm 0.9.1B6, and the latest reiser tool) with multi-level md devices (RAID 0+1) and using lvm snapshots on top of that. It runs pretty reliably, and the snapshots are great for doing DB backups. I am using the IBM Deskstar 75 GXP 75 GB ATA 100 disks. I will tell you that I have run into some issues with promise cards... I am currently using a 3Ware card. I have also had decent results with the SIIG cards. The trick with the software RAID is getting the software to recognize when a failure occurs.
