still having video problems I installed redhat9, xfree86 4.3.0...... hopin that if xfree86 4.3.0 resolves my problem, I can then buy SuSE 8.2 Still can only get 640x480x16bpp or 1024x768x8bpp... what gives? 1450 laptop, i830 video controller. Dying to get this resolved, please help!

That's what X can handle with that card. See this discussion on the topic from a developer from Xi Graphics http://www.xig.com/Pages/Atop/Topics/Topic-i830Laptops.html As far as I can see, their Accelerated X server is the only one that can handle the full specs. Looks like a crap gfx card though
