Epson C-64/84 (your choice), and install gimp-print 4.2.6 to drive. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711
IMHO anything with HP emulation mode will do because we already have full
drivers for them.
If you want color get only 4x4 models epson has one and HP another.

What do you want to print? If it's basically mono stuff, I'd heartily recommend a Kyocera laser printer. They're fairly cheap, very reliable and very cheap to run (under 1p per page). For colour, I use an Epson C40 USB printer, which was very cheap and produces pretty good results here from the GIMP. I have SuSE 8.2, and use a HP 1000 LaserJet, an Epson C40UX, a HP PSC 1210, and a Canon S200. All of them work perfectly with Linux, including the scanner that comes with the PSC 1210. HTH. Regards. -- Alfredo J. Cole http://www.acyc.com http://www.clshonduras.com linux@acyc.com

SuSE Is All U Need Linux user# 313696 Linux box# 199365 Like the man said, it depends on what you want to do with it. My latest is a sleeper, the hp Photosmart 7350. I found a refurb at Fry's for $70 USD. On
color paper it makes great color prints and using the optional black cartridge, good clean docs. Cartridges are small but seem to be good on doling out the ink. I would buy another! RA

No no no, no Canon printer! They might work more or less by now with Linux, but only because of the huge efforts of friendly hackers to reverse engineering the drivers, without any help from Canon. Canon (printer and scanner) is very Linux unfriendly, no support, no documentation. Do not support that by buying from them. Have a look at the gimp-print website http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/ it is all there list of supported printers and drivers etc. Regards, Matt
http://www.linuxprinting.org also have an impressive list of models which is/isn't supported. Their also have general recommendations of which brand to choose. HP and Epson is recommended, but (here in Denmark at least) the toner catridges for HP is rather expecsive so I think I'll go for an Epson the next time.. /Christian On Wednesday 24 March 2004 02:33, Matt T. wrote:

Regarding HP's HPIJS driver see file:///usr/share/ghostscript/*/doc/hpijs/hpijs_readme.html Regarding the GimpPrint driver see file:///usr/share/ghostscript/*/doc/stp/README or "man gs-stp". Caution: What is listed under http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/productssupported.php or http://www.linuxprinting.org/database.html or http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/p_Supported_Printers.php3 shows the supported printers for the recent driver version. But the recent driver version is often not included in your SuSE Linux. Therefore you should verify information from the Internet with the documentation on your local disk - see http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2000/08/jsmeix_print-einrichten.html I) Prerequisites ... Regarding HP versus Epson versus Canon: On the one hand HP's all-in-one ink-cartridges are expensive. On the other hand for most (all?) Epson printers: If the fine ink channels in the print-head get congested it is normally very expensive to exchange the print-head. For Canon you can often exchange both the ink and the print-head but Canon printers are often not supported by Linux - but you can buy a non-free driver at http://turboprint.de/english.html For background information see http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/11/jsmeix_print-info-for-manufacturers.ht...
