-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Can anyone recommend any Linux (preferably on the Install media on 8.2 Pro) backup soiftware that backs up to DLT? I've been asked by one of the SA's in the company, who would like to test it out, with hopes of getting SuSE into use as an officially "allowed" OS. Thanks! - -- Regards, Geordon M. Veritas NetBackup has a linux client that will work. I'm pretty certain it's not distributed with SuSE (licensing costs and all ;) but it's available for download from Veritas' support site. Veritas NBU is a pretty widely used product, so it's possible your company's SA is already running it and he's got the client on CD somewhere. It's definately not the only product, but seems to be what's encountered in most large scale environments so that's why I point it out. =) Hope that helps, -John

The most serious drawback of NetBackup Linux client is 2GB file size limit. NetBackup binaries are (still!) linked to some ancient libc. Otherwise it works nice. -Kastus
Take a look at BackupEdge by Microlite. You can download a trial version
(60 day eval, approx 3 meg DL) and try it. It's about the best one out
there overall.

This isn't exactly a "stellar" reccomendation other than it serves to announce "it works with DLT's": Arkeia. I don't think it is on the CD's, but the download from their site isn't terribly large [a few meg as I recall] The "free[bie]" version is actually the prior version and is licensed in such a way that you can use it with up to two other workstations [linux or windows] over a network. This is actually what I did: I have some video files I've been editing on a windows workstation, and I was able to back them up [some of the files were 2gb or so...] to half a dozen DLT tapes. The current version [5] costs $$$, and presumably it is "much nicer" than the free version. [go figure] It had better be MUCH much nicer, because I found the 4.x version to be a tad on the confusing side [though once I understood how to make it work, it was a breeze...] - -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2-rc1-SuSE (GNU/Linux) Comment: http://osnut.homelinux.net/TomEmerson.asc iD8DBQE+qkrpV/YHUqq2SwsRAnMYAJ48HYdfgPEMR4kcWz+gxu6Ap24W5wCgv+wn nNENF+s6/WXuVP/DT+s3qSw= =JO+3 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Tapeware is great from Yosemite Technologies. Has curses based and X11 based interfaces, also has disaster recovery bootable cdrom. Use it on my DLT 4000. -- _ _ __ _____ _____ ___| |_ | '__| / __\ \ /\ / / _ \/ _ \ __| -o) | | _ \__ \\ V V / __/ __/ |_ /\\ |_|(_) |___/ \_/\_/ \___|\___|\__|_\_v rsweet@garagenetworks.net "there's no love in fear."

I use star which comes on 8.1 ( Still part of 8.2? ) It allows for a binary verification of the backup. I have used it to restore full systems, partials etc. and it seems it work just fine. It is also public so at a cost point I really like. Greg Engel
