[opensuse] possibly offtopic-vpn ideas: windows -> openSUSE -> windows
All, -- goal -- I want to be able to "remote desktop" from my house to my office, but a NAT firewall is blocking me and I don't have the ability to open a hole in the firewall. The target machine is a Windows 7 PC. I setup logmein hamachi, and I've been very disappointed how often it goes down / fails, so I want to use my own infrastructure. I have a cloud based openSUSE box I can use to build a reverse tunnel on, so I'm hoping a "remote desktop" session can be routed through the cloud based server. -- history -- I have in the past needed to remotely log into a openSUSE PC hidden behind a NAT router which I did not have control of the router to setup a firewall forwarding rule. I used autossh on the target opensuse box to establish a reverse tunnel to a cloud based linux server. Then anytime I wanted to ssh into the target I just ssh'ed into the cloud based server and my connection got forwarded to the target opensuse box. I hoping to somehow do something similar, but with MS remote desktop this time. -- ideas -- I'm totally flexible on how this is accomplished. The opensuse server in the cloud doesn't have to be part of the solution, but I suspect using it as a SSH forwarder will be my best option to let me tunnel remote desktop traffic through it most. There are some Google hits on autossh from Windows. Google Chrome has a capability as well. But I've not used that on an unintended Windows box. -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. I found this which describes autossh from Windows: http://blog.yucas.mx/2012/11/22/creating-persistent-ssh-tunnels-in-windows-u... But I want a gui, not a command line. I guess I need a way to push port 3389 traffic to connect to ssh. I've done it with port 80 in Linux, so I guess I can do it with port 3389 with Windows. You setup autossh which forwards remote port to local port (e.g. 3389). Then you simply connect to remote port on remote system using remote desktop or whatever.

I made enough progress to start a blog post: //lizards.opensuse.org/?p=11334 I got it working if I manually type in the ssh line in "cmd". I ran out of time to troubleshoot the final stage of getting it setup as a Win 7 service. If anyone has time to figure that, it would be great. I may not have time for a couple days. I had to make some tweaks, but now have it working and it has survived a reboot of the target Windows 7 PC. No idea of long term reliability yet. If anyone else needs this functionality I have updated the blog post: //lizards.opensuse.org/?p=11334 Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Day late and a dollar short. I wrote up my solution at: https://lizards.opensuse.org/2015/04/20/using-opensuse-as-a-reverse-tunnel-s... It has already proven more reliable for me than logmein hamachi, but I still need to layer some better security on it.
