Just an idea, did you click on the OpenOffice icon on the desktop? I believe this does the workstation install, which would need to be done first before running. (this was alot like Star Office). Also you might try deleting the settings file and then start it up fresh. It should be /home/<user>/.sversionrc Once that file is removed you should be able to start it up new and reset things.
