[opensuse] TFT monitor blinking
Hello: I have changed my CRT monitor to TFT flat panel. The monitor was recognized and set up by openSUSE 10.3 automatically, the resolution is set to 1400x1050, color depth is 24. I have an ATI Radeon VE/7000 videocard. Interestingely the monitor is blinking frequently, ie. turns completely to black just for a second. This occurs eg. when I change the with of name, ext or other colums or change directory in krusader, save file or change tab in Opera browser. The screen comes back to normal after this transient one second blank state. I never experineced similar with my CRT monitor, though its resolution was only 1024x768. Any explanation, suggestion to solve this or trace the cause? I've seen this when the monitor is not running at its native resolution, and when switching resolutions. The monitor is (sometimes) trying to protect itself from out of spec feeds. Are you using the latest ATI driver, or the standard one that opensuse ships. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Istvan, Other than what John said, my only thought is to make sure you are using the open source 'radeon' kernel module and not the fglrx module. It doesn't look like the 7000 is supported by the Linux ATI driver: https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/catalyst_8... I could be, it's just not listed. -- David C. John, David: Thanks for your input. I am using the standard opensuse ati driver called "radeon". I've been using this driver for several years with the same card but with an 17" CRT monitor with resolution 1024x768. I never experienced any problem with it. My TFT is set according to the manufacturer's instructions (20" monitor, 1400x1050 at 60 Hz. The only thing I can think of that the graphics card is not powerful enough for changing the screen fast. I don't think it is trying to change resolution. I will try the monitor with another more powerful card. I doubt a "more powerful" card is a good solution to your problem. My 20" Viewsonic LCD is 1400x1050@60. When I first got it 2 years ago I was using a 4MB Tseng PCI card designed in 1996. It gave no problem in framebuffer, DOS or OS/2, but did for a time have a problem in Mandriva's X that eventually got fixed: https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=34619 Will yours work OK if you boot a Knoppix CD? Have you tried commenting out the UseModes line in xorg.conf? -- "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry." James 1:19 NIV Team OS/2 ** Reg. Thanks Felix. I commented out the UseMode option in xorg.conf but it did not make any change. Furthermore the monitor works perfectly except these short blinks. I played a little bit connecting the monitor to the card using digital (DVI-D) cable and analog VGA cable (D-Sub). I also tried another graphics card, NVIDIA FX5200. This is what I found: Blinking occurs: ATI Radeon 7000/VE card with digital cable Blinking DOES NOT occur: ATI Radeon 7000/VE card with analog cable NVidia FX5200 card with digital cable NVidia FX5200 card with analog cable I have to switch to analog cable instead of digital. I thought that digital connection was superior to analog, but it seems not in every case. Istvan, Also, don't forget you can use the gtf utility to create a custom mode line to use in your xorg.conf: 01:30 alchemy~> gtf usage: gtf x y refresh [-v|--verbose] [-f|--fbmode] [-x|--xorgmode] x : the desired horizontal resolution (required) y : the desired vertical resolution (required) refresh : the desired refresh rate (required) -v|--verbose : enable verbose printouts (traces each step of the computation) -f|--fbmode : output an fbset(8)-style mode description -x|--xorgmode : output an Xorg-style mode description (this is the default if no mode description is requested) -- David C.
