I doubt a "more powerful" card is a good solution to your problem. My 20" Viewsonic LCD is 1400x1050@60. When I first got it 2 years ago I was using a 4MB Tseng PCI card designed in 1996. It gave no problem in framebuffer, DOS or OS/2, but did for a time have a problem in Mandriva's X that eventually got fixed: https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=34619
Will yours work OK if you boot a Knoppix CD? Have you tried commenting out the UseModes line in xorg.conf?
Thanks Felix. I commented out the UseMode option in xorg.conf but it did not make any change. Furthermore the monitor works perfectly except these short blinks. I played a little bit connecting the monitor to the card using digital (DVI-D) cable and analog VGA cable (D-Sub). I also tried another graphics card, NVIDIA FX5200. This is what I found: Blinking occurs: ATI Radeon 7000/VE card with digital cable Blinking DOES NOT occur: ATI Radeon 7000/VE card with analog cable NVidia FX5200 card with digital cable NVidia FX5200 card with analog cable I have to switch to analog cable instead of digital. I thought that digital connection was superior to analog, but it seems not in every case.
