Compile the modules as root. Then run vmplayer as user.

It only needs to compile these modules once (plus any time you upgrade the kernel). This has Worked for me as car back as 10.2

That's what I did. The modules were compiled as root and after that, if I run vmplayer as root, it works correctly. However, even after the modules have been compiled as root, if I launch it as a regular user it "thinks" the modules are not compiled. Then it asks for the root password, doesn't compile anything (because it's already done) and fails with the above mentioned message.
