Dear List, KMail on SuSE 8.0 is eating my email! When I open KMail, it displays a line per email that is in my in-box; the line lists "Subject" "Sender" etc. But when I click on a line it changes to "No Subject" and the content window below is empty!! I don't want to loose valuable emails; what can I do? Can anyone help me with this problem? Is there another more reliable email client? PeerB

I'm not sure I can help, but I have the very same problem. Only way I've managed to work around it is to close/reopen KMail a few times, and then try to do a fetch from the server again. All the "new" messages can be read without problems, but the others all turn into "No subject" when clicked and can never be read again... Any hints would be helpful... -- Anders Jarnberg in Stockholm, Sweden running SuSe 8.0

Does it happen for all folders? Did you try rebuilding the indexes? go into your Mail directory and delete any .*.index files there. Then start kmail. I doubt very much the mail gets "eaten". In your ~/Mail directory you should have all your mail as plain text, whether kmail can read them or not.

KMail has been working very well for me for a couple of years now. I'd say it's as stable as any client out there. regards Anders -- I swear I do declare - how did you get that there?

Yep. Kill those index files... I saw this exact thing after I look at my Kmail-boxes with Mutt. Deleting the indexes cured it right away...

Indeed... On the subject of mailers... Would somebody please have a look at this mail, and check for malformed headers or anything else that might be wrong? After some interesting times configuring stuff, it *does* kind of look like I have a working Mutt/Procmail/Fetchmail/Postfix setup... I can't really find anything wrong myself, but I'm not too confident that it really *is* o.k. If this mail somehow ends up doing something nasty to anyone, I apologize ;) Sincerely, Jon Clausen

You may want to wrap your lines at around 70 characters. -- -ckm

Indeed... How's this? I put: set editor="vi -c 'set tw=72'" in .muttrc (Well actually I put it in a different file, and then let .muttrc source that one, but there's no problem there...) Writing this msg, it certainly *seems* to be wrapping o.k. (Well the above line, *and* this one, anyway... Just to check: 123456789112345678921234567893123456789412345678951234567896123456789712345678981234567899123456789! -which doesn't look particularly wrapped (?) Am I misunderstanding something here? Should I (un)set other variables, or does wrapping simply not apply to lines with no whitespaces? TIA Jon Clausen
* Jon Clausen;

I put: set editor="vi -c 'set tw=72'"
That is fine Your alternative could be to put this in $HOME/.vimrc au Filetype mail set tw=72 et nocindent noai formatoptions=tcq

Sweet! This means that I'm just about set to switch completely :)

au Filetype mail set tw=72 et nocindent noai formatoptions=tcq
what's this? french? <g> -seriously; I know I could do that, but I kind of like vim not wrapping my lines in general... so, this would only take effect when it's called from Mutt? OTOH, since it appears to work, as is, I think I'll leave it like that. I try to keep everything mail-related in ~/Mail (Muttfiles in .Muttrc/ and Procmailfiles in .Procmailrc/, and I even considered moving the "master" ~/.muttrc and ~/.procmailrc in there and symlinking from ~/) so that next time I upgrade or anything, I can basically just tar up ~/Mail and untar it in the new home, and with very little effort have the whole mail system (mail/recipies/all) up again...

Hmmmm... Someone care to elaborate on that? Oh well, come to think of it Kmail doesn't wrap lines without whitespace either. Anyway, I guess it's not that important, since most of the time there's gonna be plenty whitespaces... unless-of-course-you-spoil-it-all-by-writing-something-stupid-like-I-love-this...:) Now, to set Lilo to boot the 8.0 system by default, set fetchmail to poll and flush, and clear out all the duplicate mails & reset msgid.cache :) Have a great day! Anders & List, Yes! Deleting the .inbox.index file worked. Now I have to keep my eyes open to discover just how KMail gets "Confused" so that I can make an intelligent bug report. PeterB Anders Johansson wrote:

I have the same problem on a fairly irregular basis with my KMail using IMAP. With IMAP it is usually a matter of flipping folders a few times and coming back to the folder with the problem and it goes away, but sometime I have to close and reopen KMail to get it to work.
Hi all, I have a problem that I can't understand, Linux newbie that I am... My system is a Dual Celeron (SMP) system behind a KVM-switch. 128MB RAM on an ABit BP6 motherboard, Riva graphics and SuSE 8.0 Personal. Once in a while the system just hangs, as in Reset time. Desktop is froze on a screensaver. Can't kill X, can't ping from another box, can't do anything but reset it. Looking in /etc/messages I see nothing that looks odd, and no other logfile seems to contain anything useful. The only strange thing is a lot of APIC errors happening almost every third minute or so, but I've read in the FAQ that I shouldn't worry about that ? Only thing running, apart from SuSE itself, is Apache 2.0.36, and I can't find any errors in the logfiles there either. Any hints as to where I should start investigating is most appreciated. -- Anders Jarnberg in Stockholm, Sweden running SuSe 8.0

If a computer is rebooting/hanging with itself, means HARDWARE problem, check the temperature, hard disk data cables, etc. Check the fans, open the case and work with the computer, check the temperature, put a home fans (I don't know to say in english) near to the computer and test it. -- www.geekcode.com -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.1 GCS/cc/e/it d++ s+:+ a-- C++$ UL+++$ E++ W+++$ w--- O---- M V- PS PE+++ Y+ PGP- t+ 5 X++ R tv+ b++ DI-- D+ G e++$ h! r++ y++ ------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------ - A veces creo que hay vida en otros planetas, y a veces creo que no. The same thing happened to me. KMail didn't actually delete anything, but just got confused enough to not be able to display the mail. I assumed it was because I had some fairly large mail folders. My solution was to not use KMail. I was just experimenting with it to see if I wanted to switch from mutt. Needless to say, I am sticking with mutt. As another poster has suggested, I think it worth the try to delete all the hidden files in your mail directory. These are the index files and, if I remember, some files with "sorted" in the name. Look in the directory with the following command: cd ~/Mail ls -la If things look as expected, delete the hidden ("dot") files: cd ~/Mail rm .* If you have sub-folders in the Mail directory do this: cd ~/Mail rm -rf .* Before doing either of the above "rm" commands, play it safe by doing this: cd ~ cp -ax Mail Mail-save -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net
What makes you think that it is eating your mail? I'd like to know if it is eating mine! --doug On Monday 20 May 2002 17:13, Peter B Van Campen wrote:
