[opensuse] 11.3 minimum mem req?
Hi, Just wonder how much memory 11.3 needs to get installed. One of my machines is a Dell 233MHz with 128 MB. System freezes after the second part of the installation program have reached 100%. Version 11.2 does the same. Regards, Frans. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Thanks, did not find that before. So, my machine is stuck to debian or some other small distribution. I mainly use(d) that machine to have a ssh session with a (much) faster machine. Frans. PS: Google is NOT my friend. I use www.ixquick.nl to get some meaningful results instead of a endless/long list for every possible answer. Using that machine, I find - most of the time - meaningful answers very quick (yes, I did not use that before because this list works even better to get correct answers <<grin>>). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That URL is for a normal install. http://en.opensuse.org/Linuxrc should tell you to start the installer in text mode, which should work just fine with 128M, but en.opensuse.org seems to be missing most of its document content since 11.3 was released. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." You should be fine running 11.3 on your machine. I installed 11.2 on a P90 with 128Mb some time ago just to prove that it was possible. You will need swap space during the installation though. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (21.4°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Last month I tried GUI 11.2 installation on a pre-partitioned/formatted PIII/600 with 192M RAM & 768M swap. It ground to a halt about 95% complete. Trying again with 384M RAM worked fine. I didn't think to check if swap was actually used during installation or not, assuming that existing swap if present would be found and used by YaST. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." AFAIR, I didn't have to do anything to activate the swap. I can't be 100% certain about the 128Mb RAM, but I know the machine ran with only 96Mb afterwards. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (22.9°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Frans, If you avoid gnome or kde you have a fair chance, even better if you do a minimal install and add only what you need. (ssh, nomachine) otoh bsd runs on systems with mem counting only in double digits..... hw -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

As does openSUSE - 96Mb is all it takes :-) No GUI of course. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (24.9°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I double-checked this. A detail not yet mentioned is that the Live-CD requires more RAM for installation than does the DVD. With the DVD you will probably squeak by with the installation. With your RAM limitation, I suggest you consider LXDE for the window manager: It is now included with the DVD and supported, is very lightweight but still quite functional and attractive. Good luck. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I installed 11.3 on my son's Thinkpad X21(P3/700) the other day with only 256MB. I swapped out the RAM stick to get 384 after the install was done. Using the DVD(I also have the Dock for it), It activated the swap partition and used it after it started the install. It was activated after it finished partitioning/formatting. The swap partition was already there and I didn't change it. KDE4 was slow as molassas using either amount of RAM. Of course it's only got an ATI Rage Mobility chip with 4MB RAM as well. KDE3 from 11.0 ran fine, and LXDE on 11.3 ran very well. If you have the extra RAM, you can always install more and then remove when done. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
