[opensuse] Sun JRE / JDK 6u12 Via The openSUSE Update Repository?
Hi, I'm not certain about the policy for upgrading 3rd-party, non-OSS packages such as the Sun Java packages. Will update 12 of the Java SE 6 software be released via the openSUSE update repository for openSUSE 11.1? Yes, likely today via the usual update repo. (Lived in update-test now for 7 days to show if there is any breakage.) Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Great, thanks. That's a lot more convenient than installing Sun's RPM.

Has been released an hour ago, so it should be on the mirrors soon. To get the right on x86_64 machines: zypper in java-1_6_0-sun-plugin.x86_64 Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I just installed the update, however something seems a bit off: % ll /usr/lib/jvm |egrep '1.6' lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 32 2009-01-11 11:52 java-1.6.0 -> /etc/alternatives/java_sdk_1.6.0/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 2009-02-16 07:08 java-1.6.0-sun -> java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0/ drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 64 2009-02-16 07:08 java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0/ drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 16 2009-02-05 15:02 java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.u11/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 2009-01-11 11:49 jre-1.6.0 -> /etc/alternatives/jre_1.6.0/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2009-02-16 07:07 jre-1.6.0-sun -> java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0/jre/ % type -a java java is /usr/bin/java java is /usr/bin/X11/java % java -version java version "1.6.0_12" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_12-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.2-b01, mixed mode) So the question is, why is there a discrepancy between the directory names, which mention u11 and the version that's running, apparently version u12?

Is there stuff anymore in java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.u11/ , or is it empty? Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It is empty, save a directory hierarchy skeleton of 31 (empty) directories. So why leave these dregs behind?

Its just a bug I guess. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

They appear not to belong to any RPM. Is the bug in (one of) the package(s) or in the RPM software?

I guess one of the java packages owned the directories, one other did not and they got updated in the wrong order. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes, likely today via the usual update repo.
By the way, is it possible to keep more than one JDK installed when using the openSUSE packages and YaST (or zypper or whatever it is that handles package management over RPM)?
