9.3 partial install
Tried installing 9.3 on my old server and due to a flaky DVD drive when the first boot came up it went straight to the kdm login prompt. Since no passwords were set yet I can not login. Can anyone tell me where I need to set/unset something, install something so that the install can finish? I don't consider this the fault of SuSE as the DVD drive is going bad and I ignored many install errors. Thanks, -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

Can you reboot with the DVD in the drive and repair (and repair, and repair) over and over again until it is complete? Then you could at least try to copy the DVD to your HD and install broken/mis-installed packages from the HD? Or maybe if you have a spare HD you can copy the DVD to it, boot from that HD and install to the HD that you want the system on. Is the DVD drive repairable? I am assuming you have check the power cable, IDE cable, and possible used a DVD cleaner or compressed air. - James W.

Yes have checked all that. I know the drive is starting to fail )over heating), it just happened to fail at the wrong time during the install. I was hoping to be able to log in and copy the DVD to the second hard drive but I can't even log in as that part of the install never started, setting root's passwd and adding one user. Going to do a minimal install w/X in the morning, hopefully with fewer packages it should complete then I will be able to rsync the dvd to the second harddrive and install more packages. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998 "The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners." -Ernst Jan Plugge

You may consider putting the DVD drive in the refrigerator or freezer for a couple of hours before you do your install. It works with HDs that are about to kick the bucket. You may also try ejecting the DVD if it seem to be getting hot, wait an hour or so for it to cool, re-insert the DVD and resume the install. - James W.
