I'd like to add another hard-drive to my linux system, currently running Suse 8.1. The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7VAX, it only has two ide connectors, one for a hard-drive and the other is used for a cd. Has anyone successfully used any of the ide pci adaptor cards with 8.1? Thanks. Al

On each IDE connector of the mother board, you can connect two units, one as master, one as slave. So you don't need a pci adaptor card. Catimimi. Thanks. With the two connectors you get four ide devices, two on each controller. If you still however want to go beyond four ide devices, I have used a Promise Ultra ATA-100 card to add an additional two ide connectors to give four extra ide devices. regards, HTH Ahbaid sniptest@cox.net wrote:

I know the Promise controller works just dandy for adding hard drives -- but how about adding other IDE devices such as DVD drives? By the way, I wonder if folks have encountered power and cooling problems with more than two hard drives. Paul Abrahams

I have four WD IDE drives, 1-20, 1-80 & 2-100. The 2-100's and a dvd reader are on my Promise-100 controller. I have booth hard drives and the dvd set to dma100.

Case is open since I fiddle with hardware a lot, but only heating problem I have had is the cpu fan quit. But that should not be related to heat from the Promise board. All in all, there are seven cards including video and I still have two unused ide slots. It is a soyo board w/733mh cpu & 133mh buss. I have acpi disabled. After all, the board is 6+ years old (IIRC). -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org
